RIP Taunton

These are some of my favorite shots that I ended up with over various trips to Taunton State Hospital. I'd appreciate some honest criticism of them. Picasa is the beginning and end of the processing I used on these. I'd like to say that I prefer for my exploring time to dwarf my photo processing time, or that I'm a staunch believer in getting basic photographic technique down before stampeding ahead into extensive processing. Both are sort of true, but really my sub-90-second processing method comes down to me being a lazy person. That said, I'm always willing to learn. All these are shot at ISO 100 except 5 and 6, which I'm surprised to see were shot at ISO 200.

# 1, 2, 4 and 5 I really find impressive. Great job with the natural lighting and the composition!

2 and 4 are my favorites. I love your composition and the way you effectively use natural light. Wish I had the chance to catch this guy.

Thank you for including info about the photo (ISO, f stop, etc). I sometimes toy with different exposures to see what produces the best results, it's often helpful for me to see what settings others use.

Very nice set of pictures, like others have said great use of natural lighting. Nice rule of thirds usage also.

stellar.

my only critique would be the blown out windows in #1. shoot a larger aperture and peek at your histogram afterward.

leave the gun. take the cannoli.

Thanks all for the compliments; I was really looking for suggestions for improvement, though (thanks Corly). These are photos that I really like (but would still like to be better, since the place is now gone); next I guess I'll post some that I'm really frustrated with since the place was amazing and I couldn't capture it satisfactorily.

chris - you're exposures are spot on in almost every shot. you have picked interesting subjects in most photos. my only real criticism is the compositions look a little sloppy in these. not that sloppy, but if they were tightened up it would improve the picture so much. what are you shooting these days? nearly any modern/professional camera will have a grid focusing screen option which will help a ton in creating straight or symmetric compositions.

1 - great exposure, you can tell by this shot that the camera lens is pointing up towards the ceiling and it is almost distracting. the point of view is almost unnatural to the human eye. if you took this exact shot but brought your tripod up a little and dropped the lens down to make it straight I think this would be much better.

2 - I like the simplicity of this shot but it is ever so slightly crooked. And by that I mean you can tell your lens was not squared off with the wall. You can sort of correct this in post if you're using photoshop go to filters->distort->lens correction. For this particular shot I changed the horizontal perspective to '-9' and it seemed to correct the issue. other than that great shot

3 - the exposure is solid but you are off (technically) with the composition. again with the lens pointing up (unnatural). it also appears the camera is crooked slightly to the right side and you are not centered in the hallway. that grid focus would help you see this through the view finder.

4 - compositionally one of the stronger pictures in the set. nice lines - verticals are straight and the diagonal do a nice job pulling you into the photo. good exposure and in my opinion one of the prettiest hallways in the place.

5 - this shot is crooked, but it appears intentional. I do like the floor boards creating a trap for the eyes in the lower right and how it balances the main focus of the subject (window). my only real criticism is that the exposure (although it displays everything you are aiming for) is almost too exaggerated. It may look a little better if you blended the exposures so they were more even.

6 - another great shot - the only problem i have is you cut off the top right corner of the door ever so slightly. if you raised your tripod an inch or two you would not have lost any content on the bottom of the frame, but it would complete the subject a little better

7 - I think my favorite shot of the set. solid content, solid exposure and the composition is great. I like the ladder on the right kind of counter-balancing the pipes on the right edge.

all in all great set - remember to watch you lines and be sure to not cut anything off!

*also on the hallway shot - it isn't a bad idea to shoot it with a smaller aperture.

i believe you said it was f/9 at 4 seconds?

If you cranked your aperture to 22 it would have been about a 25 second exposure. if you're shooting off a tripod it isn't a hassle at all and you would be able to pull in a little bit more detail.

I like them all except for the third one. The angle it was taken at gives it a slightly tilted and distorted look.

The last one IMO seems like it could use some more contrast, but that's just me.

Now viewing "life after people" in current time.

Thanks Jeff, very much appreciated. I can totally see most of what you mentioned, all stuff to keep in mind. All these are shot with a D80, and I think all were with the Tokina 12-24 with the exception of the second and fourth ones, which are from when I was still shooting with kit 18-135. Maybe the last one, too.

By the way that second shot I was like standing tiptoed on top of a table with my tripod fully extended, it's probably shot from about 9 or 10 feet off the ground, so yeah I was a little sloppy with the lines.
