Wow, way to be supportive, she's posting in Critiques for constructive feedback, not to get flamed. But yes there is nothing spectacular about this photo. Keep shooting and learning how to use your camera. Read the forums there's tons of good tips at how to get better photo's.

| | | you know to be honest it's not a horrible shot...there's some eerieness to the shot with the fog, and the little cabin is kinda creepy looking. maybe some tweaking in photoshop could make it better? keep shooting.

I didn't expect anyone on this thread to fall all over themselves telling me that I am some kind of artistic savant. What I did, however, expect was an honest critique of the photo I posted as well as some constructive criticism. I was under the misguided impression that this section of the forum was here to help people better their skills and perception. I posted my 1st attempt as a jumping off point. What is the use in me posting my 12,000th photo if I had been making novice mistakes the entire time, but was never aware of them, and thus could not attempt to correct them? I don't even particularly care that you think my photo is "shit". But, perhaps, you could have taken the time to dismount your pedantic high-horse long enough to tell me why it is "shit". As for everyone else; Your elucidation of the faults in this photo were, and will continue to be, most helpful. Thank you to the people who have managed to be concise in thier critique while still remaining tolerant. Tu as été pesé, vous avez été mesuré, et vous avez été pris en défaut.

| | | Lady_grace, I think what the other posters' here are saying regarding 1st vs 12000th photos is that usually, at your first attempt, you can see plenty of flaws on your own. Our critiques might not be that useful if you can think of big, obvious flaws without help. Once you've taken 12k photos, you're likely to reach a point where you can no longer think of any way to improve a given photo - /then/ you should ask for help. That said, here's my (admittedly inexpert, potentially poorly articulated and not incredibly well informed) critique. Technically, I'd try to get some more contrast, or even just get a lower exposure. This is from what I see as a lack of shadow - most of the image (with the exception of the window) and the side of the house) are all about the same level of brightness, giving the image a somewhat bland appearance. You might also want to play with the color levels in an image editor- there's clearly some pretty colors at play in a wooded scene like that that you could bring out. With regards to composition, I'm not entirely sure how best to improve it, but I do think it needs some work in that respect- it's not that visually interesting. It's a single element in the center of the image, shot nearly dead-on, with a pretty uniform frame. One thing you might try could be to add subjects- get a tree in the foreground (moreso than the ones on the left) along with the house. Another would be to play with angles and framing on the house (see some examples of a similar subject with more interesting composition here: http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=73578). I'm no expert in design and composition, so maybe someone formally trained (or at least better informed) can give you more specific pointers there. So, while the photo's not great, keep at it.

| | | Edit: looks like macman5151 beat me to it on some of these, sorry to be repetitious! I'm somewhat of a beginner on the photography side of things myself, but I think a couple of ways this shot could be improved are: 1) Try not to center the point of interest directly in the middle of the shot- moving the cabin, in this case, to one side, or to the bottom of the frame might make it a little more dynamic. The "Rule of Thirds" is not the only, or even the best way to compose a shot, but it's a good rule of thumb. http://en.wikipedi...iki/Rule_of_thirds 2) Up the contrast. Another rule of thumb is to keep a full range of value, from bright to dark. This shot is washed out- you've got lots of light, but the darkest bits are only a medium gray. You can fix this in Photoshop or whatever program you have access to by fiddling with the Brightness/contrast setting. That way you can get your shadows closer to black, while keeping your highlights bright. I hope you don't mind, but I just fiddled with your image for a minute to illustrate- You could probably do a better job doctoring it if you spent a bit longer than I did, but I think it "pops" a bit more this way.
3) Finally, the biggest thing that has improved my photography is getting a tripod, even though my camera is a middle-of-the-road point-and-shoot. It makes shots much easier to compose, and come out much clearer. You can get a small decent one for like $20-$30.
Hope these help, and don't let the trolls get you down! [last edit 10/26/2009 5:18 PM by Avius - edited 1 times]

| | | | Re: 1st Attepmt... <Reply # 9 on 10/26/2009 5:22 PM >
| | | Well heck, I'm sad I didn't see this earlier. Avius brings up a good point about tripods - Especially in low-light situations, keeping the camera perfectly still makes longer exposures more achievable. I know maybe two people who can handhold a 1-second exposure and get a sharp picture, and I'm not one of them. Once you have gotten pretty good at getting the most you can from a single exposure, a tripod makes other blending techniques possible. If you want a simple and free photo tool, Google Picasa works fairly well to increase saturation (RGB all at once), contrast (the "Highlights" and "Shadows" slider), and so on. It is definitely a simple one, but it gets you used to the basics of getting a photo to look like the scene did (And the fact that most cameras aren't very good at that!).

Lady Grace, I'm sure you know the internet well enough to ignore people like this. He's below notice and not deserving of your time. That said, a lot of users here use programs like Lightroom, Photoshop and others to enhance the images they take. Your photo could benefit from some processing, as Avius kindly pointed out. I really like the textures you had, and can see why the scene caught your eye. Composition-wise, I also think Avius gave a great tip as to where you want to position certain components of the scene, to make it unfold more naturally and aesthetically for the viewer.

there are all kinds of logical flaws in this and it smacks of ivory tower elitism. all she was doing was looking for some pointers, and has a reasonable expectation that this advice will be provided. then, equipped with it, she will move on and apply what she's learned to her next work -- and hopefully come seeking feedback and have the wisdom to separate the grains from the weeds like she's having to here.

| | | To be honest, I like your original better. The edit looks like every other over saturated high contrast photo out there. I thought your low contrast, somewhat pastel colour scheme shot (at least, that's how it looks on my screen) was a nice change from the usual. And it doesn't matter if this is your first shot, or your 12,000th shot. You can always learn something to make the next click of the shutter better. | | | Seriously though Lady Grace.... I think this made a good shot. I would add that when looking at a broad scene to photograph imagine a big tic tac toe board across it and try and get the interest points in your photo into one of the outside boxes when you frame up the shot. You can google the "Rule of thirds photography" It is derived from the golden mean. Another good thing to google for composition is "The golden Swirl photography". Not sure if either of those google searches will cover this so look it up too.. "Central Composition photography" Basically you want to split landscape photos horizon line by at least 60/40 Meaning you have more land or sky in the photo dont split them evenly in the middle. Anyway I really liked your photo and yes you can overcome many things in post process but getting it as close to right out of the camera as you can get is a good thing ;) Try finding a local camera club in your area usually there are many and allot of the time completely free to join. I included a couple of edits myself of your shot. One is a little darker than the other. These took about 10 minutes in photoshop. Just to give you another comparison of different styles that can be achieved with the magical photoshop :)
