| | | Yep - Freemasons can believe in any god or God. The Catholic Church considers Freemasonry a heresy, mainly because it's a cash drain, that's where the DeMolay and other orders came from. At the higher levels of Freemasonry there are some oaths that include all sorts of phraseology that Catholics, and many other Christian sects find rather objectionable, if not sacrilegious.
Posted by Air 33 Atheist? A few months ago another mason here enlightened me to the fact that Freemasons were not just Catholics as I had assumed as he was Jewish. So does this mean any religion is welcome, including Muslims? If so that's pretty interesting of a requirement, to believe in a god...any god. No I'm not being a smart ass. I'm curious if there are lodges in places like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Papua New Guinea.

I asked this question at a masonic open house. They answered that you need to believe in a higher power so that when you make an oath to the organization you swear by something more than yourself. It is a way of making one feel accountable for their obligations. They said that they had had Hindus and Muslims pledge before, so I guess it is all-inclusive, where ever you have enough interest to set up a lodge.

Isn't that what the G in the middle of the Compass stands for? God and Geometry? Just watched a special on the Free Masons the other night, very interesting and amazing how one man completely distorted the view of what a free mason really is. (Never noticed that Yankee's avatar was the symbol either. I need to pay more attention)
The caged being inside of you must break free from his shackles, for our partial sanity or pseudo-sanity, if so applies, cannot contain it forever without repercussion of mental breakdown. |

I thought the G was for the lodge, and would be different according to what lodge you belonged to. Do the lodges correspond to regions?

It stands for God, or the "Great Architect of the Universe." Also, yes, there are Masonic Lodges in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Israel and serval other countries. It is very popular in Japan and South American as well. [last edit 10/20/2009 8:09 PM by Yankee Traveler - edited 1 times]
