The Freemasons were basically the guild for stoneworkers, then they became a sort of mystic group. They were fond of puzzles and such, a very secretive not-so-secret society. But yeah, the Masonic Temples themselves aren't likely to be dangerous unless they're occupied. I'd say don't worry about it too much. Hell, one in my city was turned into either a hair salon or a bank, can't remember which.

Um, we still exist....but as far as dangerousness in the temple - don't worry about it. Just do me and my brothers a favor...don't trash it or steal from it please. I'd love to see some pictures.

I didn't get the connection at first. Allegedly the Knights Templar was wiped out and thier members became the masonic guild throughout Europe to hide thier membership. Then they became Free and Accepted Masons where non masons could could (people who didn't work in stone). That's pretty much where we are today in a very brief nutshell. America has Freemasons.

What is the reason women cannot join? I've never had that one explained to me other then "they can't".

Why can’t women become Freemasons?

Freemasonry is a fraternal organisation firmly entrenched in tradition and history. The original Constitutions were published in 1723 and are fundamentally what all Freemasons all over the world are united by and adhere to. To change these Constitutions to allow women to become members would require Lodges throughout the world to agree to the change. As cultures are so diverse and vary so dramatically in terms of social structure and gender relations, making this fundamental change to the Constitutions would be extremely difficult.

Family and family values are an important part of a Freemason's life and families are frequently invited to take part in Masonic activity and the day-to-day workings of the Lodge. Freemasonry can provide men and their families with a fun and active social life with like-minded people from all walks of life. Freemasons are very appreciative of the support our partners and families give us as it is vital to our development as Freemasons.

Also, there are age restrictions, for example, atheists cannot join either. There are several restrictions, the gender of a person being just one. There are other Masonic organizations (e.g. The Easter Star) which both men and women can join.

Without being a wiseass, a BROTHERHOOD is just that.

IE: Bitch! Clean the toilet!

IE: Bitch, bake some brownies, the masons are having a bake sale.

Atheist? A few months ago another mason here enlightened me to the fact that Freemasons were not just Catholics as I had assumed as he was Jewish. So does this mean any religion is welcome, including Muslims? If so that's pretty interesting of a requirement, to believe in a god...any god.

No I'm not being a smart ass. I'm curious if there are lodges in places like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Papua New Guinea.
