I hate carrying anything with me exploring. Usually everything I take with me exploring is stuff that I have on my person at all times. Except when I'm doing a more specialized trip, like if I'm doing a photoshoot somewhere, going draining in a drain with deep enough water to warrant waders, sleeping somewhere, or doing stuff that involves climbing gear. But for a normal explore, all I bring is a flashlight and phone. I am a photographer and love to shoot abandonments, but I don't enjoy having a camera with me in a new place. I'll only take a camera to a place that I've been to a few times already and am very comfortable with. I don't know anyone else that does that though...

I've been considering moving to that policy, as I have a hard time deciding between taking the time to get a good photo and finding out what's around the next corner. I'd like to be free to explore and leave the photos to later. On the other hand, sometime I get handed entries of opportunity where I get somewhere that I won't be able to get back to later, and I'd like to have a camera along for those.

I'm thinking of getting a pocket-sized point-and-shoot to take on initial trips for just that reason.

One day I'll go somewhere and never get to go back. And I'll be glad I saw it, and if it was a dark place I'll be happy I got better pictures of it than a tiny point-and-shoot allows. Honestly this is why I stick to the Canon minisuper cameras - pretty good pictures in a small box. Although the new version (Powershot sx120is) has a sensor that is leaps and bounds beyond the one in my hand...

exactly.

I've had a small canon p&s in my with me at almost all times for the past 7 years, and most of the best photos were chance encounters.

But it's ORANGE...blends in so well with...nothing really

It is orange, true dat. But see, that's not so much an issue for me. I've never been spotted or challenged by security, I believe proper approaches have a large bit to do with that.

Besides, my clothing choices are often brighter. And even if you do get nabbed your simple explanation of 'I'm just a photographer, not here to vandalize' will get more weight if you're not dressed like a commando. Nothing screams 'you don't belong here' quite like some jackass dressed like a ninja.

Also, three perks with this bag:
The chest strap has a safety whistle built in to the buckle, remember any set of three loud noises is 'SOS'.

The mesh back padding is eggshell foam textured with a mes weave over it, and directly behind that is the hydration bag sleeve, so it's extremely cool in the summer.

It was 30$ through some sale, watch passwird.com for a few weeks before you buy something, maybe you'll score a deal?

If you do go for a P&S I can't say enough good things about the canon / CHDK setup. It's got a bit of braniac bullshit to start with.
Just the extended exposure timers and RAW file format alone are well worth the effort.

If you do go for a P&S the gorrilapod has worked well for me:

Was using the Burton Zoom bag for a couple years before I just upgraded to the new one. I throw all my crap in there and that's it. I have however put my camera and gear in my fishing box and carried a pole to make people think I was only fishing down by the "ol mill" and that's worked out great. Just make sure you have a fishing license if you do that. You could probably even bring two memory cards and replace the UE one with a blank one incase someone checks your gear. I have done the memory card trick but haven't had to use it yet.

I know what you mean. Last few new places I have checked out, I hardly took any pictures on my first go around. Went down to south pa for the day, came back with a handful of pictures. Got too caught up in looking for new exciting things.

Im a die-hard gear head. I carry cheap Walmart backpack with 3 straps that do up across my chest and stomach, which take a lot of weight off. Also, for 20 bucks, you can carry all you're gear and blend in with "normal" people. Cheers!

I travel really light. Few screwdrivers, a hammer and my camera. Two spare rolls of film and that's it. Should start bringing water and stuff though.. and beer..

Edit: poor grammar(and again)

I've got an army surplus belt with a pile of pockets. It's too much for most trips.

I've come to rely on another utility belt. It was made for me when I worked at Michelin building tires. Its a seatbelt cut to fit as a belt. Velcro holds it together. On my belt I've got a flashlight loop, a smaller secondary flashlight in its sheath, mini-binoculars in their pouch and a handkerchief stuffed in a similar binocular pouch. I'll usually slide my Gerber multitool on to the belt. And if I'm going somewhere remote, I'll slide a hunting knife (in sheath) on.

Typically the seatbelt belt is pretty light. I'll snap a photo sometime when I'm home.

I carry my Lowepro RL 200 bag which is good for a Camera and 2 Lenses but even that get really heavy. I also have a Gitzo tripod which I got for traveling and it is super light weight! I highly recommend one if you really want to cut down on weight.
