I always bring at least my flashlight, with a red filter on it, and my inhaler because I'm an asthma nerd. Other than that, I dress for the weather, always wear my hiking boots so I can have good grip if I need to shimmy up or down I-beams or whathaveyou, and bring my camera and/or tripod. Unless there's a chance I could end up stranded for a while, I never bring snacks or drinks.

Above all this, the most important thing that I never forget to bring is a nice bottle of cabernet sauvignon and a corkscrew. And gasoline. Gasoline is important to use to leave a fire trail in case I should get lost in a particularly disorienting abandonment.

Usually just a pocketful of film, my OM-20, and a flashlight.
If it's something extensive, a day pack with the same plus some water/food and knives.

I usually just bring a flashlight, my phone, my wallet (ID and money), and sometimes my digital camera and a swiss army knife.

75% of the time I'm down a drain, so...

* Maglight, backup flashlight, D's for both
* Headlamp
* Pair o' glowsticks
* Small pocket-size multitool
* Sharpie & paper
* Steel-toes
* Cell phone with crappy-but-adequate built-in camera
* One piece of ID
* Mickey of Fireball
* First aid kit, if nobody else is bringing one

And here's the optionals for draining-
* Compact bolt cutters, because Scarborough parks & rec is vigilant
* Coveralls, safety vest, hardhat - go on and laugh until you choke, but for the minimal weight of a safety vest and hardhat (I wear coveralls down most drains anyway) I can pop manholes in public parks during broad daylight and never attract a second glance. The hardest part is not snickering like an idiot because everyone just assumes you're supposed to be there. If I'm draining at night I don't usually bother.

wormgear -noun, verb (slang)
1. Boots, coveralls, and other frequently muddy gear worn by drainers ("Take off your filthy worm gear!")
2. The act of getting unstuck in a corrugated metal pipe, in which case the only escape is having your buddies spin you around like a corkscrew

There are a few interesting drains about the Scarborough Bluffs where the only good entry points are manholes within eyeshot of roads. Although wouldn't try it in front of a cop, mind you

Flashlights, first aid kit, gloves, facemasks, cellphones, hard cases for my glasses, weather-appropriate clothing, my camera of course with extra batteries...

Haven't needed much more than that, yet! All packed in a nice backpack. I usually wear a thick but shapely jacket and tough pants to keep from getting scratched through my clothes.

Light trips or recon:

Boots
Hoodie
CARGO PANTS
gloves
Headlamp
Cellphone/camera
Glowstick
A lighter
Small notepad & pen
Roll gauze

Medium length trips:
All of the above and,

Either a pack or a camelback bag
Extra socks
Small (12ft) tape measure
Compact first aid kit
Extra batteries
Asst. Food
Extra glasses

Longer trips:
Most of the above and,

all the stuff you'd expect on a longer trip!

I think these lists are almost silly to a degree. But I've done such a variety of different types of things that what you need changes for each type of situation and the possibilities that you assume may exist.

For example, if I'm going mine-shaft creepin', I'm gonna bring a whole load of climbing gear, extra lights, a helmet, etc etc...

If I'm going for a stroll through a local abandoned building I'll prolly run pretty minimal unless I scout it out and decide I'd like to get more in-depth with it, but then I also decide what to bring the 2nd time.

One thing I do draining with that most of you probably don't is a Petzl climbing helmet. I'm right around 6'7" though, so you lil shorties have an easier time of it. *shakes fist at you in mock rage*

If I'm going for a tight set of drains, like the kind that was common near where I grew up, I'd take elbow/knee pads too. Those things are a tight squeeze in places but they can go for quite a distance that way and then open up again.

A SKATEBOARD is bitchin for small diameter drains that are smooth bottomed in some way (like, not corrugated). Not for standing on, of course, but for laying on.

Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =)

Hmm...

I may be minimalistic but the following is all I can think about bringing with me for my first exploration. When I’m heading for work I hate to have more then my laptop bag and my purse so imagine if I’m about to go explore something. A small backpack with these should be more then enough:

On me all the time, every day
- Cell phone (I’m sleeping with it )
- My camera

In the backpack, all the time:
- A Flashlight
- Extra battery for the flash light
- A bottle of water
- My really basic first aid kit

After that, what will fill my backpack will be different for every place (wet? Really old? Really dark?) I could use an extra pair of pants probably (Hoodie + T-Shirt for top clothing will do) and a snack. Beer isn’t a good idea… I would end up shaking it while exploring and it never looks good when cops find you… That’s why I’ll bring wine instead! XD

You've got a point there, about the wine.

Cops find you with a nice bottle of merlot (or whatever your flavor is) and they figure you're a classy gal. And classy gals shouldn't be arrested for tresspass. Problem solved!

Really! I'm still wondering why the fact that it looks classy makes people forget that you end up drunk way faster XD

Let's just not remind the security/cops of this point and yeah Problem solved!

A rule of thumb to remember is that less is more.

When I first started exploring, I would bring tons of crap that, at the end of the day, ended up being dead weight.

Depending on your circumstances (how much camera gear you use, how long you plan on being out), I would recommend a medium-sized backpack at most.

If you feel the need to bring more, leave the non-essentials in the car (if you have one, of course).

Always:

-An extreme sense of curiosity

Sometimes:

-Backpack
-Carabiner, load bearing or not doesn't matter to me
-Camera (Nikon D40)
-Tripod
-Flashlights (2 AA Maglite, 3 C Maglite, Xenon/LED spotlight)
-Headlamp (Princeton Tec Remix)
-Doorstop
-Pen
-Leather gloves
-Rubber boots or combat boots
-Clothes I don't mind having rust stains on, or holes from snagging on fences
-ID

I try not to take:

-People I can't trust
-People who steal/vandalize or are noisy
-Knives
-Anything that could be considered a burglary tool
-An unhealthy state of mind
