Finding a drinkable beer in a can is NOT an easy task.
James Page and TJ's Simpler Times Lager are both good choices.

What's wrong with a bottle?

I've been planning to bring a good hefeweizen (with proper glass) to the next roof I visit.

I always take a copy of Windows Server 2003 Unleashed (The R2 Edition) and if you don't your not just NOT an explorer, but a fool.

Chris...

Tssss... Why bring a book.

I usually take these:
. Manuals can be read online, that's why I usually also bring a POTS-PBX and a cellular connector for it. Modems can usually be found on-site (though at a variety of baud speeds).

Though I once was stuck with this, as the location only could live with magnetic tape (12" reels) and floppies...

checklist of what to bring ... what NOT to bring ...
VITAL EXPLORER EQUIPMENT:

fubar wrecking bar

I want one!

But in all seriousness, I have a full checklist, which contains 3 main parts:
PACK
  • Contact lens stuff (portable) + glasses
  • Cleaning towels
  • Overall (I used to bring this often but don't do this lately)
  • Buff (I bring this because my headlamp will slide off of my head without it. No, tightening won't help)
  • backpack
  • Tripod
  • Camera + batteries + cards
  • 4.5L water / day (that's 3 1.5L bottles)
  • Coke (usually I bring either 2 .5L bottles or 3 cans)
  • Cookies (the fruity ones)
  • Bread (that means: 8 slices of prepared bread, usually with cheese)
  • Head lamp
  • Batteries AAA (for head lamp)
  • Passport
  • Documentation (maps etc)
  • Tomtom
  • Binoculars
  • Radio
  • Portophones
  • Cash (50 euro min)
  • Toilet Paper
  • Crayons / Wasco
  • Coat

When in cold:
  • Camera Sock (funny story, my IXUS' battery life DRAMATICALLY decreased in the cold - so I brought a sock to keep it mildly warm between shots). Haven't tested my EOS 450D for cold)
  • Gloves
  • Tuque
  • Shawl

Multi-day trips:
  • Toothbrush + paste
  • Contact lens stuff
  • Deodorant
  • Sleeping bag / mattrass / extra blanket
  • Pillow
  • Clean clothes
  • Towel
  • phone charger
  • camera charger

DO
  • Charge camera batteries
  • Charge portos
  • charge 6 AAA bateries (put 3 in headlamp)
  • charge phone
  • charge toothbrush
  • music on SD-card (for car radio)
  • CF-card empty
  • CF-card in camera
  • make bread
  • empty car
  • empty coat pockets
  • write down locations / in tomtom
  • write down phone numbers

GET
  • Cash money
  • Cookies
  • Krentenbollen (a dutch treeat)
  • Coke (bottle (for in the car))
  • Coke (cans)

About 2 days before going on a trip, I start ticking off this list and charging/buying things, ticking off items I have and that I don't need (for e.g. - no portos when we're going with only 1 car). Usually people laugh at the amount of stuff I have with me (including, in the car, another 6 litres of water, a first-aid set, another set of toothbrush and deodorant and car-lighter-chargers for most phones) but usually, in the end of the day, allways someone has had to rely on one of my items.

Bottles can break. But why bring beer at all? Don't they get all shook up in your pack? I try to go as minimal as possible, and take NOTHING at which the gendarmes would look askance.

Why, for celebration, of course. Nothing like a good bock or wheat beer to celebrate a good entrance. I'll admit, I haven't done this yet, mainly because I haven't had a good location for it. I think I'll bring it next time I try a certain tall psych ward, as it'd make an awesome picnic at the top.

PACK

* Contact lens stuff (portable) + glasses
* Cleaning towels
* Overall (I used to bring this often but don't do this lately)
* Buff (I bring this because my headlamp will slide off of my head without it. No, tightening won't help)
* backpack
* Tripod
* Camera + batteries + cards

* Cookies (the fruity ones)
* Bread (that means: 8 slices of prepared bread, usually with cheese)
* Head lamp
* Batteries AAA (for head lamp)

* Binoculars
* Radio

* Toilet Paper
* Crayons / Wasco
* Coat

Wait, you bring all that on a single day trip? A lot of it makes sense, but some of those (coke, passport, contact lens stuff, etc) seem like carrying a lot for a short trip. I suppose it's just a matter of choice, but I really like being able to just grab my pack and go exploring on about 5 minutes notice.

I suppose my pre-trip checklist for a normal local run is:

prepExplore(){
car += gas;
battryCharge++;
getMap();
grab("tripod","camera","water","flashlight")
if(have("granola bar")){
grab("granola bar");
}
go();
}

Well, that was when I had a car, I wouldn't bring all that now that I'm reliant on others for transport. I'd ditch the tomtom and the radio off course, and the portophones can go too.

However, yes, I bring all the other stuff. It's not too much though - it all (sans tripod) fits in one backpack, if I leave one bottle of water in the car for drinking there.

Tijmen

P.S. I have a backpack that doesn't feel right until it has at least 4 or 5 kg of stuff in it.

WAAY too much stuff.

WOAH! That much stuff would bog you down.
I don't think all that is necessary, only bring what's necessary for your expedition, and what you can carry.
I definitely wouldn't bring a bike, because a bunch of bikes outside a drain/building might look sus, and they could get nicked.
I guess you could use a scooter/skateboard if you don't mind carrying it around.

But water, batteries, food, first-aid, and a few backup supplies are always a must. In my case i might even bring my gas-powered soldering iron if my custom floodlight goes out.
Maybe fill a small backpack with stuff, don't let it exceed 7kg [~15lb] or it'll be cumbersome and annoying.

- Maglite.

- Camera/tripod combo.

- Doc Martens.

- A hoodie.

- A bandana.

- Cigarettes and a lighter.

Aaaand...yeah, that's pretty much it. Sometimes I'll bring in my messenger bag if I feel like having a place to store stuff, but that's only if I feel it's a location that warrants more than the basic equipment or if I don't mind having something strapped around me throughout my exploration. If that's the case, then I usually toss some Bandaids in my bag since I'm really hapless and usually end up hurting myself. Mostly, though, I like to keep things simple. You really don't need much for a basic exploration.

Something I never see on peoples list: An emergency whistle. You know, a "rape" whistle or whatever. If I'm disabled and in an out of the way place I can only yell for so long and the whistle (I have a killer one) can be heard far and wide. MHO.

oh em gee. I can't believe I've never even considered this before. Usually I think so much about how not to make noise this would never have crossed my mind.

Beer is a liquid, therefore it is drinkable. ;)

As for stuff I bring...

If I'm thinking ahead more than "I want to go take photos somewhere" then I'll have my backpack with a few lights (usually two headlamps), my camera, my tripod, maybe an extra layer if it's cold, and my tripod. Sometimes I bring gloves. Usually I forget water but it's good to have. I try to always have my ID on me, and I usually have my phone. Typically my backpack always has a lighter and a knife in it, but lately the knife has gone missing. =\

I don't like carrying a ton of crap with me, and backpacks are unwieldy for climbing. Minimal is better. Having a first aid kit and other emergency stuff would be swell, but that's just unneeded weight/bulk in all likelihood. Besides, you can MacGuyver stuff in a pinch if it becomes necessary.
