Collateral consequences of criminal charges

Hello all!

In my increasing interest in UE I am becoming less cross over the physical dangers or even fines/short incarcerations as a result of criminal/civil trespass. What really troubles me is the long term consequences such as trouble finding jobs, expulsion from college, and denial of security clearances or professional licences.

Thus, has anyone here suffered long-term reputational or professional damage as a result of criminal records related to your UE activities?

We have never received more than a trespassing ticket. No big whoop. Oh and once my feelings were hurt.

The question is not when are we gonna stop, It's who's gonna stop us?

Virtually all legal firms have something to this effect:

"Trespassing may seem like a relatively minor criminal charge, but there can be unfortunate life consequences for anyone who ends up with a permanent criminal record. A criminal conviction will show up on a background check, and can limit your ability to get many different kinds of jobs. An experienced criminal attorney will help you fight these charges, and give you every opportunity to get the charges dismissed, or beat them at trial. A legal consultation is a wise choice for anyone faced with a criminal arrest and potential prosecution."

Is this just fear mongering to buy their services or is this a legitimate concern?

Well, here is my concern and it will probably mean nothing to the majority of the people who explore, but it is kinda my life and what I have to work around.

I like to go and live in other countries, legally. Most countries have a 'good character' provision, and there can be consequences for having a criminal record both before and during immigration. I also might not be able to sponsor a visa application with a criminal record, which could affect my fiance (who is of a different nationality than me).

So, ah dunno. I'd rather not get arrested for that reason, and I'd feel pretty uneasy about even getting a ticket.

I'm going to college to earn my masters in biology, with which I plan to teach with. After I graduate college, i plan on joining the army as an officer. After that, i want to go to africa, teach in a grass hut while my girlfriend uses her nursing degree and does nurse-like stuff in the same village. Somewhere in there i also want to backpack around Ireland.

None of this will be possible with a trespassing conviction. If I get caught and the fallout makes it all the way to court, I will have to re-plan my entire life, because none of those things would be possible. I would like to explore a lot more places more often, but working two bullshit jobs is all the motivation I need to make school count for something.

Much like I thought: the real punishment is after the fine/probation/detention occurs. Nonetheless, losing all of your hopes and aspirations due to a non-violent offence (I would argue less serious than speeding as this puts others at risk unlike trespass) is grossly disproportionate to the crime committed. This world is badly made...

I think you're being a little over-dramatic. A trespassing conviction will not change your life (maybe in the short term, but definitely not in the grander scheme of things). In most jurisdictions just trespassing is merely a ticketable offense, and if you happen to be someplace where it isnt, get yourself a good lawyer if and when the need arises. If you've no priors (which I'm assuming you dont), then trespassing is but a minor blip on the radar, and you should at least be able to get the record expunged within a reasonable timeframe.
I can't imagine you'd be kept out of any country in Africa (or Ireland either for that matter) because of a minor trespassing charge at some point in your past. Convictions for drug smuggling or serious violent crimes are another matter, but trespassing? forget about it.

I wouldn't go pushing your luck with sensitive or active sites, but don't let your fears needlessly dissuade you from your current hobby....or do....

everyone i know with no prior record that has been arrested for tresspassing has plead guilty, paid their fine/court fees, and were told it will not leave the county.

Just be logical about what places you do and do not decide to visit if you are so concerned and make sure you limit the chances of getting caught... ie no big groups, dont park right out front, use cover, be discreet, be alert, have an exit plan, do some research/scouting, know who you are exploring with (no people with priors, no minors), dont have weapons or tools on your person, etc.

I work for the state and things like misdemaeanor charges, even DUIs are in no way dealbreakers when hiring people, esp once you are finished with any probation and you usually with no priors wont get probation for simple tresspassing

In Ontario here, its a provincial offense, carrying the weight as a speeding ticket or similar offense.

aka, its not really a concern.
