Elgin: Life is a (Sausage) Party

"TR. Hey, TR."
"What, Fear?"
"Let's go to ELGIN."
"WHY would you want to go to ELGIN?"
"I wanna write a post and call it 'Elgin: Life is a (Sausage) Party'"
"...."
"And there's the prospect of an abandoned grain mill."
"Let's go."

And that is how we found ourselves in TR's car, which unlike mine, has no cool name, heading into Bastrop County. On Labor day.

The title is what it is, because Elgin is known for its sausage. This is exactly the kind of cutting-edge wit that can be expected from me.

Really, though, we found Taylor to be MUCH more interesting than Elgin. And we've made the obvious discovery that we need to invest in a real camera, because it's hard to take a lot of photos with a cell phone.

The main reason we went to Elgin. Unfortunately, it looks like it's being renovated. It's missing a roof, but has a brand new door and windows. Like everything else in the main part of town, it's right on the railroad tracks.

One window already has a hole in it, maybe from a passing train, or bored teenagers. From what we saw, the only things for bored teens to do in Elgin are:
- Play chicken/re-enact 'Stand By Me' with the trains
- Find abandoned buildings to have sex in.
- Cow (Actually, since this is Elgin, it's probably be 'hog') tipping.

Unfortunately, the majority of places were closed because of Labor Day. The trip was worth is, though because we found 'Monkey' and 'Beaver' roads one right after the other, which we found hilarious.

We found a cottonseed oil mill. It's kind of at that might be, might not be abandoned stage.

There is rust. So much rust.

It was not the right time. This building (probably a bar) was abandoned, and securely locked up.

This post has been brought to you by...

and by...

DAN QUAYLE'S DINER: Remember, it's spelled 'potatoe', not 'potato'.

Actually, the diner is the City Cafe, right on Main Street. Try the french fries.

can you see all of that faint writeing next to the doors of the right time?

I saw a breathing lump under a blanket, what could it be? - 1 hobo - 2 dwarf hobos - 8 racoons - 443 rats - 896 mice or 11 rat kings?

Good eye... I'm curious, too. It looks like the random writing you find on the back of street signs in Dallas, especially near the Hospital District.

Nice set! I'm a little sad that they have replaced the door on that building, it looked very cool with all the vines growing over it. When we went (which was several months ago) the whole place was basically a bee hive. I didn't stay inside too long 'cause they kept buzzing at my head.

We were also unsure of the abandonment status of the mill. It seemed pretty abandoned, and there is that area out behind it with all those machines just rusting away, but it was also weirdly intact. One of the rooms was full of millet, which, for the record, is extremely slick when spread out thin on a cement floor.

And your pictures are pretty awesome for being on your cell phone

Sorry for late responses. I've been busy with work and studying.

I do wish we'd gotten closer photos of the writing. There really wasn't much graffiti in the town. We found a bit, but it was all on a building right on the train tracks. Like Taylor, the heaviest form of 'vandalism' seemed to be scrawling messages in the dust on the shopfronts.

It'd be nice if they renovated the feed mill for historical purposes, but with the door, it looks like a realtor's office, or something horrible. They also chose to replace only the windows and door so far - there was no roof, and a trre was growing up through the middle.

The cotton oil is hard to determine the status of. There was a locked gate, and what looked like recent tire tracks. (Of course, those could have been from some time ago. We hadn't had any real rain until today that could wash them out.)

Very cool! I'm curious as to what it says next to the door, too. Someone invert the picture and see if you can read it.

Elgin is a cool little town. I shot a wedding there back at the end of April.
good sausage, questionable motel I stayed in, though.

The best motels are the most questionable ones.

Unfortunately now it looks like bad album art.
