| | | K, so I found the coolest damn government web page around. It will tell you where old abandoned buildings are at in your county. www.nationalregisterofhistoricplaces.com It will even tell you how big the facility is and how many buildings it has, in addition to purpose and period of operation. Some of the addresses are 'restricted.' And the ones that are restricted have cool names like Skull Cave. But I'm sure that there's enough information to go on for an enterprising mole rat. Enjoy as much as I did.

Thanks Phantom! [last edit 3/26/2003 7:25 PM by Solid Shadow - edited 1 times]

| | | The problem with historic places is many of the protected sites are in good shape and well, protected. I've found a much more useful govt provided resource is the EPA's list of superfund sites. Obviously theres some inherent risk in finding your new playground off a catalog of the most polluted places in america, but theres a nice reward in finding a nice factory, carinogens or no.

| | | Wow, nice site. I just found an abandoned church (that I didn't even know was abandoned) about 3 blocks from my house. Looks like I just found something to do tonight... Thanks for the link!

| | | Well, the site works wonders for me. I've already located a spot on there that proves that it's working properly, and and just dying to test out some of the other ones on the list. Thanks a ton, phantom.

| | | Looks like a very useful site. Although it seems many of the listed locations in my area are residences.
With the exception of the round house ( http://deadplaces.gnuk.net/round.html ), I have never found anything worthwhile in an abandoned house. [last edit 3/27/2003 6:19 AM by F8l error - edited 1 times]

No, that is the EPA's phrase for 'the most contaminated hazardous waste sites around'. Previous poster was correct that the www.epa.gov/sites/superfund.html search engine will turn you up lots of interesting industrial properties, many abandoned - but PLEASE also read what kind of nasties are there. Figure out what the contaminants on site could do to you before you make a decision to go. And as a historian I can say it - the NRHP rocks!

| | | Always wise to check what is contaminating a site before entering.
This pic was from the Li Tungsten Superfund site in Glen Cove, NY. The sign alone was enough to keep me out, and once I had the details of all the contaminants, I was very glad I did. Uranium238, thorium, and a host of other heavy metals are present there. Stupidest thing is, they've started to redevelop parts of the site as a park before the cleanup is complete!
