Electical Lines

There's a building a few blocks from my house that I want to climb on top of and see if I can get to a better location (a warehouse that I think is abandoned, I'll have to look into more before I do anything.) There is a spot with a bunch of pipes and some fencing that is ideal for climbing, but, it is also the building's main electrical junction. I had a picture on my phone, but I deleted it to take a picture of something else.

My question to any one here would be how safe/unsafe is it to climb around that stuff? Obviously it is dangerous, I'm not totally stupid. But danger comes with a lot of stuff that happens in UEing. Is it waaaay to dangerous to even attempt? There is spots where there is way less wiring, almost none in some cases, that is easy to get up to. But a wrong move could spell disaster.

If I absolutely had to, I could possibly find another way up, or boost someone else up. But I also just want to know for future reference. This is just one of the stages I'm in as I progress to hopefully entering this building a short distance away.

Thanks for the help!

well in this world some people have to learn the hard-way, do you really think its a good idea to climb up a building using hydro lines? is this building really worth the risk?

They say "you can't judge a book by its cover!" I say "YES you can, if the cover has a girl on it with a cock in her mouth, its PORN!" if she's 18 and the cock is black, its GREAT porn!

Technically if no part of your body is touching the ground or touching anything else touching the ground you could climb up the wires. And then swing down and just drop. It's how birds/squirrels are able to sit on the cables and not die. Don't bridge the connection.

But I've only seen it done (on TV) a few times. One guy managed to evade police by climbing down and over the wires.

But are you really willing to risk it for access to a roof of a building?

"No risk, no reward, no fun."
"Go all the way or walk away"
escensi omnis...

I must have worded something wrong.

I was just saying that there is an area with a lot of electrical lines around it and I was asking if it is to unsafe to even attempt to operate around it. There is a few climbing spots where I could probably by pass the wires by a good foot, foot and a half if I was careful. Obviously I would never climb up the electrical lines, that's beyond dumb.

It's not easy being cheesy.

I'd say: if there is a chance you touch the wires: no.

While if it's low-voltage (110V 60Hz) certainly won't kill you with a short touch, if you're already climbing then you're probably shocked (haha) enough to drop yourself. And, what the 60 Hz does is contracting your muscles very rapidly, so after a shock you'll have no muscle power left for a few seconds to brace yourself.

Slim chance of electricity = just another danger
Slim chance of electricity + fall = don't do it.

Envisioning the situation you just imagined, I'd say, go for the other way.
Also, in urbex (and in anything but love and war): if you aren't sure, don't.

P.S. That indian shock video is sickening...
P.P.S. I'm getting old... I checked your age and thought "1991, he's just a kid.... Ow wait, 1991 that means he's already 18..."

The spark distance is about 1000 Volt per cm (or 1 inch for every 2500 V). So you won't be shocked by getting near them. However, if you touch them and fall, you're peanuts. Also, make sure you don't carry anny accessories (long hair, flashlight, long penis etc) that can bridge that foot.

Are you talking about the service drop? Looks like this?

Start by recon'ing how many black insulated conductors are wrapped around the uninsulated one. Regular old residential 2-phase will be 2 wires twisted in a double helix.

Despite endless PSAs to the contrary, when I called CMP for a "line wrap" when I was doing some roofing near my service entrance, the operator said "oh those lines are safe to touch".

We were taught in school that the coating on transmission lines (10s of thousands of volts) was weatherproofing and not insulating, why they hang on big ceramic resistors and are single conductors. But transmission lines hang way overhead and don't (usually) go to individual building drops-- they go to substations with razor wire and humming electrical looking things to cut the voltage to something useful, and less deadly.

If the service drop, all wrapped together, had non-insulation, it would short to itself and be useless. Consider however that the insulation may have degraded on the outside where you would grab it if you slip or whatever.

Suppose the best answer would be to get us some pictures.

ive been an electrician for 17 years.
like most have said above, dont try it.
regardless of what was said above, 110 CAN kill you. someone said you can touch the line if youre not grounded. thats mostly true. i say 'mostly' because just about anything can act as a ground.
touch those wires and the side of the building, and youre going to get a shock and fall.
the fun thing about service drops, is that theyre not really fused. (meaning they wont shut off).
even if the building has no power, those lines are likely to be hot.
find a different entrance, or let this one go for now

Whoa - thanks for the tip. I'd been too lazy to carry an AC line detector on my roofing trips (where I'm on the roof near these cables).

if it involves electric transmission, and you have to ask. the answer is no/avoid it.

There are very specific techniques for dealing with high voltage with can be very dramatic in its effects.

even low and medium can be deadly. household 110/220 can kill, and are always unpleasant. Industrial sites commonly have 575v feeds for large motors/machines. That will fuck your whole world up.

Unless you know what your doing, stay away from electrical shit.

This isn't to rag on you, its just because I want to see my fellow explorers have fun and enjoy the hobby, not have hospital trips or die. Stay safe and have fun.
