| | Newly abandoned factory question < on 9/3/2009 10:19 PM >
| | | I tried searching for an answer to my question but my search came up empty. How long should you wait to explore a building after its abandoned? A very large factory in my local area has been abandoned for the better part of a year now and i'm curious to see whats left inside. Any of you in the London/St. Thomas area may already know where i'm talking about. Also if anyone is interested in checking the place out let me know!

| | | Depends on what you're looking for. Good decay typically takes over a decade to set into a building, so if you're looking for rotting floors, moss, dust and peeling paint, 10+ years is a good bet. If you just want to roam about an abandoned location, the day after close is great. Plenty of people also explore semi and fully-active locations, so it really depends on you. If you're asking this due to questions about security- that's something you'll have to stake yourself out on site to actually find out, as there's no blanket answer to that.

| | | I'm mainly just curious to see what large companies leave behind when they close up shop and move operations to mexico. The only real security i've seen so far is local police patrols, some neighboring businesses(most only operate in daylight hours), and a cleaning truck has been spotted twice. There's 3 building's on the main site. 1 across the street, and 1 that was a holding yard down the street. All have been sitting empty.

All good points by hydrotherapy. Security is a major concern on recently closed places. Often they are being offered for sales and they owners want to protect their investments. That said, seeing the equipment in place before its shipped to foreign soil can make a visit very interesting.

| | | I went by the factory tonight to try and scope the place out and this is how it looks now. Every building has for sale/lease signs on it. Main building
Finishing yard offices
Warehouse
Holding/shipping yard
They now have a security guard posted up with a car
My wife told me the building next door has been abandoned for awhile now too. [last edit 9/7/2009 12:53 AM by RCR619 - edited 1 times]

Do you know the reason it's abandoned? If the company went bankrupt, usually all their remaining stock and machinery are auctioned off - usually there's pretty good security, paid by the curator or auctioneer, until after the auction, when it drops to zero or the occasional drive-by. However, if a company is moving to a new location, they're usually transporting their stock and machinery before they actually close down - but they're sometimes leaving a lot of older machinery around, which they can't use anymore and will sell for scrap value. However, security tends to stay longer, but on a lower pace than initially. But I'd say: just go in and don't let the dogs bite you!

| | | Re the possibility of the location having security (& that's not necessarily a human presence either, could just be motion-sensors & cameras), it's dependent on the location. Some locations are monitored because they're either dangerous (i.e. a former chemicals lab which hasn't yet been cleaned out or a Flour Mill, where the flour is highly combustible) or they contain sensitive information (military installations etc) or, as mentioned above, they still have machinery inside etc. Best thing to do is research on the location & what it was used for, scout it out thoroughly & see what the security is like & then just see what you can find. If you do your research, it'll also make it easier to find entry points & locate all the cool stuff inside. [last edit 9/8/2009 11:51 PM by cryogenic - edited 1 times]

| | | to me those places are vacant, not abandoned. there is the intention of someone moving in hense the for sale/lease signs. i see this as property someone still has title and interest in. those places are in great shape and would be viewed by the law as break and enter more than trespassing. Agreed. Thanks, now I don't have to type that as well! Some one does own those and they probably be calling the cops when they see you.

| | | I went through the place last sunday night. My pictures turned out like crap though. Way too dark and it would have been a little too risky to turn on the lights. The only part of all the buildings being checked are the offices and some pipes (sewage?) in one building. I even had a chance to follow a guard all the way through his checks(about a 20-25 minute round). He didnt even notice I was tailing him. Every hour on the hour he does the exact same walk then returns to his car for a smoke and to continue texting/talking on his phone. The inside of the building is covered in garbage front to back and some old truck cabs. Other than that, everything has already been shipped to Mexico. The factory next door was full of machinery though. It appeared as though everyone just left work one day and didn't know they wouldn't be returning. No guards, no alarms, and the parking lot looks like its being cut into pieces by the grass and small trees. The loading docks have become a makeshift swamp full of frogs and bugs. Oh and its only breaking and entering when you dont know what your doing and get caught!

Is this the truck place? If so, there is LOTS of expensive machinery there that might not have been auctioned off yet.

That was a concentration camp, not a battle... Get your facts straight. What does Apeldoorn have to do with your list? Don't you mean Arnhem?
