| | D'oh! < on 9/3/2009 1:41 PM >
| | | I've been watching a house... the grass hasn't been cut in forever, all the signs of abandonment are there, including the sheds out back looking like they've been abused by people and the weather for a long time. Decided to go last night. Pulled in the driveway knowing there were several old cars on the property. The nice new one parked behind just didn't fit. How disappointing, someone seems to live in this crap hole??? LOL Gonna keep an eye on it. It could be another UE was there. How do people wade through tall grass to get to the front door of this place? Maybe they're being eco-friendly not cutting the grass and letting the backyard eat up the old cars and sheds... just a theory. So, for the first time in my short UE career I was cooked. Everything else I have wanted to go to or get into has been good (targeted spots I mean, wandering with Fedge we found some with no good POE). What a letdown. All that adrenaline gone to waste...

| | | A lot of abandoned houses have people that are charged with keeping an eye on them to make sure they don't get burned down or something malicious of that sort. Check for lights at night and the meter thing. It is probably abandoned, just kept an eye on. And if there is no poe, just make ones. Boards can be taken off and put back on.

| | | Yep, can't think of a house yet that I've explored where I've parked anywhere else... it's not that big of a risk here since we mostly don't have guns. And this particular house you could hide the car behind, which would be way way less noticeable than parking on the side of the road where no one else parks, but where traffic is rather heavy. Seeing as there was a car there I wasn't about to get out and check the hydro meter since that would look odd in the extreme. Just gonna keep an eye on it, watch for lights at night, maybe turn around in the driveway a few times to scope it out. If it isn't abandoned now I suspect it will be soon, whoever is there doesn't seem to care much about the place, at least not from the outside.
OH, and I had NO intention of breaking in... if it's open, great, if not... oh well.... [last edit 9/3/2009 6:56 PM by justakitty - edited 1 times]

| | | Can't have 'm all. However, I've never really explored houses other than in abandoned villages, but for industrial locations, on-site-parking or close-to-the-site-parking has almost always been one of the safest options. Only once, I've decided to park about 500 m away while we could've parked on-site. Tijmen P.S. justakitty, what's your avatar from? It rings a bell but I can't discover what it really is.

| | | I feel your pain. About a month ago I came across a really cool abandoned warehouse/storagething on the way back from a Ren Faire (about an hour away). The place was pretty delapidated, grass growing all over the roof, etc. Unfortunately, I'd used up my camera's battery at the faire and I didn't have a flashlight with me, so I could only do a cursory exploration. I found a good poe, went in and looked around a bit (finding some cool stuff), and then left, vowing to come back. Of course, that was on a Sunday night. I come back later that week (an hour drive out) to find a semi and several cars parked in front of this place that was apparently less abandoned than I thought. Was much depressing.
Be careful, not safe. "Urbex- so much fun that it should be illegal." |

| | | Yep!! It sucks. Still gonna watch that place though... I find it funny that I get flamed for suggesting that we had every intention of parking in the driveway and then I go looking around at pics and find that I am not alone... plenty of other UEs seem to do it, maybe not all the time but certainly some times!! Guess this is my turn to be "newbie flamed"!! I'm thick skinned, I can take it!
But seriously, there are spots where walking into a place (carrying a camera or not) stands out way more than pulling in the driveway. I can't be the only one that tours to areas where a house might be in the middle of a barren field and walking in would just let everyone going by wonder wtf??? And if they have a vested interest in the place then they can wonder wtf as they pull in...

| | | The reason I never park in front of the building I'm going to explore is simply that it ruins any chance you might have of running. Suppose I'm going to explore an old factory and I park somewhere on the premises. This creates two problems, the first being that anyone driving by that notices a car that's not supposed to be there could call the cops. Second, if the cops do show up for one reason or another there's no way for me to duck out and flee to safety. If I run away, my car is still there and all they have to do is run my plates to figure out who I am. I'm not saying you should park farther away, but I certainly wouldn't be comfortable parking on the property. Either way, you should try that place again in a week or so. From the way you describe it, it doesn't seem like it's very active. [last edit 9/4/2009 8:52 PM by Switch_ - edited 1 times]

| | | It certainly depends on the circumstances, that's for sure. Factories or things like that I wouldn't wanna park in the lot, though I can't say I would bother running from police anyway... it's way cheaper to pay a trespassing charge than to get nailed for evading police, but that's just my thought on it...

Welcome to uer. So it goes. I like explorations where you can literally drive the car right into the place. Always amusing.

| | | In fact, I also do a lot of μE, or Micro Urbex - this is "exploring" a location in just 30 seconds by driving in, looking around and driving out (also very useful for off-limits parts where a door is left open. I've had a "you can't come here" once and then I said "just turning around the car, sorry". Tijmen P.S. μE combines very well with the ancient Sicilian art of drive-by-photoshooting
