I'm visiting El Paso in a little over a week and was wondering if there's any cool sights to go to while I'm there.

the ymca of greater el paso has a pretty cool basement, it was some sort of a fallout shelter and there are weird stairwells and passageways all over the place

There are a few things here. The old Western Playland amusement park still has some things to see, there is a beautiful old brick building in the rail yard east of downtown, a 60's motel on Mesa on the West side of town, the last few buildings of the Magic Landing amusement park on I-10 on the east side, the tin mine in the Franklin Mountains park, and a few more.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

An abandoned mine sounds so cool, but it's got more than its share of dangers, right? Have you been in it?

The tin mine is the place for non miners to get underground the first time. Its neat to see, but you are safe as in your mothers arms.

Cool cool. Any hospitals? I think abandoned hospitals have got to be my favorite. Any pictures of these said locations?

No abandoned hospitals here. Sorry. Western Playland is in the database. I haven't been to Magic Landing, because everyone that goes there seems to get arrested, haven't bothered with the motel, because its fairly lame, and the tin mine is basically just a cave. Not a whole Hell of a lot to see.

I forgot about the airplane graveyard in the SOuth valley. Don't bother with google earth. They are well hidden under trees. The town of Cornudas is east of El Paso, and pics of it are in the DB as well.

There are some other things to see here, including several cool spots, but I had to bust my ass, and kiss several others, to get in. Not handing those out. Nothing personal, but sorry. You want cool, drive 45 miles North on NM 54 to Orogrande. Couple of hundred mines there, many extremely cool.

Oh, RobertB, mines can be killers, but not if you know whats up. You ever want to get underground, come up and see me.

I'm sorely tempted. We'll see what happens when the kids get settled into school.

In a similar vein, are the guided "wild cave" trips at Carlsbad worth a shot? (And, of course, I still want to visit the nuclear test site!)

I love taking folks out to mines. The first "WHOA!" makes it all worth the time and trouble.

The guided trips at Carlsbad are as close as most folks will ever get to free caving. Def worth the time.

Trinity Site is kind of a letdown. 20 years ago, it was OK, now its meh. Time and theft have taken their toll. If you are in the area, OK. Don't make a special trip.

Actually, while I would like to check out the Trinity Site, I was talking about the GNOME test site. According to the site I linked above, there's nothing there now but a plaque warning visitors not to dig for souvenirs. The main attraction is that it's just 40 miles southeast of Carlsbad, which makes it right next door in that neighborhood.

The Atomic Energy Commission tried exploding a nuke in an underground salt dome, with the hopes of creating a mass of liquid salt that could be tapped for heat energy. Result: massive FAIL, with nothing to show for their efforts but a plume of superheated radioactive steam, and "minor" contamination of a "limited" area. It's been decades, so any residual isotopes have long since decayed, and I wasn't using my 'nads for anything useful anyway.

Well color me a shithead! Didn't click on the link.

That area around GNOME is actually sort of cool. Tons of old ranch houses to explore, and if you know where to look, the remains of a bomber crash site. There are also some quite lovely natural caves, such as painted grotto, which are unguided. Damn few mines though, hence I don't get over there much.

I went out to orogrande but couldn't find a damn thing. I know there are mines there, nut they aren't easy to find and the locals I asked didn't seem to comprehend what I was asking them. You could try the asarco plant, easy enough to get in a back way, but avoid the front entrance as there is a guard dog and ostensibly, a guard; though he never came to shut the dog up who was slobbering all over my door.

Damn Noah, I didn't even think about giving you specific directions. My apologies!

The locals are basically three toed tree sloths. If they had anything on the ball, they'd have gotten out of that craphole and gone to live somewhere else.

Just FYI for anybody coming this way, The mines are located in the small mountains just North of the town of Orogrande. Take the small dirt road about 1 mile North of town that leads West. Once you get back into the foothills, there will be mines everywhere you look. The best of them are roughly in the center of the mountains on the North - SOuth axis, and justly slightly to the East on the East - West axis. Several have been caged off, but keep looking. There are some beauties out there!

I've actually never been in a mine before in all my years of urban exploration. *rubs chin in thought* I will keep that in mind.
