My findings in Gary, Indiana

Not so recently, as it has been about a month or two since I went, I finally drove down to Gary, Indiana after mapping it all out. I have a lot more pictures if you guys want, but these are the best ones I got from the trip. Let me know what you think.

This is from one of the upper floors of the abandoned post office.

The basement of the post office was flooded, and there was a fine mist everywhere. I didn't get the best picture, but it will give you an idea.

The Jackson Theatre, of course.

The main church area of the Gary Methodist Church.

EDIT: Sorry about the weird spacing between pictures. I tried to fix it.

That's a cool town to spend a day in.

Killer photos. Is Gary as rough as I've heard?

Gary is a crappy area, but pretty safe to explore in.

During the day that is.

Those look really good. I love the light streaming in and the reflections from the post office pic, and the shots from the Jackson theater are nice. Good work.

Not really. I didn't run into anyone throughout the 10 or so buildings I went to, but that's not to say there isn't some homeless i just didn't notice.

Thanks, I tried. It looked a lot cooler there, but obviously i caught some of it. I'll venture back there eventually now that I have a new camera

I have not been to gary in months. I kind of miss it, but since they locked up the schools pretty hardcore I just have not been motivated to head back up there. The post office is fun though.

Hey yeah you, fat ass. Not interested.

Keep checking the schools. They seem to be hit-or-miss.

Gary is at a new low point in crime. Don't forget they had the multiple homicide at the Bennigan's Ballpark parking lot a couple weeks ago in broad daylight. I get tired of seeing people post "Oh Gary IN isn't that bad!" it really is that bad! I'm not telling everyone to not explore Gary, but keep in mind how bad it's gotten in the recent years.

9/11/01 all gave some, some gave all. 343.

My very first post, and while I've been reading this forum forever, I signed up to warn people about Gary. Growing up one town below (Merrillville), I will tell you that I have had a few friends shot at, one car jacked while going on a alcohol run at 17 in "da hood" and another one who had his bike and shoe's stolen at 13, ALL DURING THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY!

It's scary during the day if you're from around there, I have lived next to it for 20 years and would never, EVER go there during the night to explore even with 20 friends... Let's just say there are many many drugged up folks without any income who would think nothing of robbing you at gunpoint for that camera and your gear, give them any attitude and they WILL pull that trigger, the place was the murder capital of the USA for like a decade.

There are tons of sites to explore, mainly most from prior to WWII, however for the love of God do it during the day as Radio2600 has said, and stay as close to Broadway and Ridge Road as you can!!! Use google maps sat images to find the bigger sites, I'll start posting them if I can ever get back there, in NW Chicago now... Oh and the Gary cops are WAY WAY to busy with 2 major gangs and millions in drugs going to/from Chicago via I-65 and the hundreds of crack houses...

The shot with the windows reflecting in the water is killer.

Now viewing "life after people" in current time.

UPDATE:

I went back there, and this is what I got a hold of. I had more trouble with the police being absolute smart asses, then any people. I ran into a total of about 5 photographers, and I did make a new exploring buddy.

These flowers were inside the post office:

I also found an abandoned bowling alley, suggested by ilduce:

I did however, have the pleasure to run into Camille and Kennerly, also known as The Harp Twins. They were playing inside the Methodist church. If you would like to hear them, they can be found at http://www.youtube.com/mabelsogn or http://www.HarpReflections.com

I encourage you to listen to some of there stuff, they sound beautiful.

Sounds like you just missed us; we left just as they arrived and started unloading the harps from their vehicles. Didn't know there were so many explorers out that day!

I thought the cops didn't care in Gary either...but they do.
Got busted at one of the schools before. Stayed away from Gary for a bit, maybe a month, haha and then I went back again.
