Yet another abandoned hospital (but with a bonus story).

First off, as the new guy here, please allow me to introduce myself through photos and a semi interesting story. I live in Tyler, Tx., and have been Urbexing for about 6 months now. I was inspired to start doing this sort of thing after looking at a Flickr set of Hellingly Asylum shot by Jeremy Gibs, who hails from London. After viewing his set, I immediately went out and bought a camera that I had no idea how to use, gassed up the car, and went to Ellerbe School in Shreveport. I've pretty much been hooked ever since. I hope to be a contributing member here, and look forward to hopefully getting to meet some of you. Alrighty then... without much further ado, here's the hospital and accompanying story.

The original plan was to check out an abandoned hospital right here in Tyler. As I was literally headed out the door with my camera, my wife's friend told me that I should check out a hospital in Jacksonville, Tx. Though she didn't know the name of the place, she said it had been abandoned since she moved to the area back in '94. She also told me that the basement had a crematorium, and that it was the only one within a 50 mile radius back then. Armed with that info, off I went.

Pretty neat looking place, I thought. Now, to find an opening.

Done deal. Let's check it out!

This place had every religious themed book known to man. Every single title I saw was somehow related to God. "Managing Money Through God", "Creating a Healthy Marriage Through Christ", "Jesus and the Seven Dwarves", this place truly had it all. The chairs were pretty interesting as well. 15-25 years of abandonment and they're all still perfectly organized, just waiting for their next patient. Things were rolling along just fine, so I decided to make my way out of the lobby and into a hallway. This is where things got a little iffy. The grafitti ceased to exist for the most part. The walls had been raped by copper thieves. There was no more Christian literature. It just had a different vibe, and for the first time in my urbexing career, I didn't feel comfortable being in a place. There were no strange noises, or anything of that nature, but my gut told me to leave, so I did.

The next day, my wife's friend called me and told me that her husband wanted to go check out the hospital with me. Great, I thought. He's the type of fellow who probably uses dynomite to fish with. Kind of like Joe Dirt meets Dog the Bounty Hunter. So the sun sets, night approaches, and we're back for round 2.

O.K., so a bum lives here. No problem. I've dealt with alot of homeless folks, and most of them are just happy that you're not a cop there to harass them. We press forward.

Never one to pass up on a free salvation, we followed the arrow down the hallway. As we approached the end of the hallway, my buddy raised up his hand telling me to stop. He whispered to me that there's somebody in that room. Then I heard some rustling around. I told him that it's just a bum trying to hide, so let's leave him alone and take the hallway leading to the left.

We continue our trek forward, admiring how deceptively big this place really is. We finally see the staircase. One flight going up, the other going down. The crematorium is supposed to be in the basement, so down we go. Every single step was covered in crushed glass, even though there was nothing made of glass around. Once you reached the basement floor, it too was covered in glass. My buddy commented about how he thought it was a sort of homeade alarm to alert people to our presence, but I shrugged that off. We walked in to a large waiting room area, and passed a few elevators that had seen better days.

These would be the last pictures I took of the place. The doors to every room in the basement had been propped open with chairs to help with circulating the air. Pretty standard for homeless people, I thought. I managed to snap 6 or 7 shots down in the basement area before we heard the first noise. It came from a hallway directly to our left and sounded like muffled whispers. Both of our flashlights pointed into that direction. That's when we heard the footsteps. Running toward us. I paused for a second to decide if we were going to stay and see what we're up against, or split. My amigo made the decision for me, because when I turned back around he was halfway up the stairs shouting "F**k this!" As I took off running behind him, it occured to me that I've never seen a homeless person run... espescially not towards a flashlight. As we regrouped at the ground floor staircase, there was another noise. More footsteps running toward us from the UPPER LEVEL to match those coming up from the lower level. I suddenly started thinking in text lingo and thought "WTF?" to myself. Am I in some sort of zombie movie? We hauled as much ass as two white guys can haul in a dark hospital, camera dangling from my neck. In my memory's version of the events, we gracefully and effortlessly jumped out of the window that we came in from... shards of glass be damned! In reality, we probably looked more like two borderline parapalegics who tumbled out of the window face first.

No one followed us outside. I didn't look behind me while we were running out, but based on sound, we counted at least 5 other people in there with us. Exceedingly athletic bums? Crazy meth addicts protecting a lab? Cultists? No idea, but my money is still on zombies.

It was definitely a great idea to start reading some other regional sections on here. Great story, great pics. Looks and sounds like an interesting little place.

Thanks for the comments everyone! I'd love to go back and actually find the crematorium area, but I don't know if I will. It doesn't usually work out well for the person who brings a camera to a knife/gun fight.

Very nice. Running footsteps don't happen often in an abandonment so I'd probably freak a bit too. My guess would be that it was meth addicts / cooks.

Edit: Of course we all know they were zombies. Pepper spray doesn't do too much against them unfortunately.

My gosh that place has gone WAY down hill since I was there. I have not been in the place in about 3 years. It's mutilated. Damn. I know what you mean about the creepy feeling. There is a place in that building (sounds like the place you are describing) where I get a creepy feeling every time I go in there.

Great story and pics !

Just too bad you couldn't get to the last part, but totally understandable ! (especially when we look at TVs where almost all we see are guns fanatics in the states) It's a good reminder to be very very careful

there should a police for abandoned building to protects the sites against homeless !

Not sure which TV's you're looking at. Good heavens, does the world really have this misrepresented view that we're all riding around in large 4 wheel drive pickups, spitting tobacco through 3 teeth carry guns just waiting to shoot someone?

Oh... forgot to mention. Hate to burst the bubble on the crematorium idea, but what is in the basement is a common incinerator. Not a crematorium. It is a mechanical room where the heating cooling systems are located and it is often standing in about 2 feet of water.

The problem is that the people who best represent those views are very, very loud.

I was talking to someone from Ireland who had recently interviewed some folks (including me) about the Dixie Chicks. On the "I still hate the Dixie Chicks" side was one of the right-wing voices from AM talk radio -- I recognized the name, but I can't remember it. The interviewer said that it was an... interesting experience.

I asked if they had folks like that over on their side of the pond. "Yes," he said, "but they *lost* World War II."

(Not intending to get political -- there are more than two sides to every issue -- just pointing out where "the world" gets its impression of "us".)

J'ai toujours fait une prière à Dieu, qui est fort courte.
La voici: "Mon Dieu, rendez nos ennemis bien ridicules!"
Dieu m'a exaucé.
