What Might This Huge Factory In Japan Be?

So, I am skateboarding trough Japan right now and I found this absolutely HUGE industrial complex. It is in a bad shape, more like ruins than abandonment tho there`s still a lot of stuff intact. I managed to take some photos before the police showed up and I had to get out. I really didn`t feel like explaining to them what I was doing there with my camping equipment and stuff.

I thought about adding it to the UE database (I have two other kickass locations aswell) but I really don`t know what this has been.

My best guess is an Oil Refinery but I wouldn`t bet on it. The complex is ludicrously big, dozens of huge buildings, halls few really high chimneys and a lot of pipeworks. On the edge of the site, theres a big field of pools that reminded me of some abandoned waste water purification plants I`ve checked out in Finland.

Some of the fifty or so pictures I had time to take are here:

http://koti.mbnet.fi/bushi/Jpn/

I hope that url works, I just made a picasa account just for this.

The pictures pretty much suck because I`m not much of a photographer and my tripod got washed away by a flooding river earlier during my trip.

edit: changed the url

Well that last picture's writing (the one over the tracks) I recognize some symbols in it from my time in Japan.

The first two are the kanji for japan "nippon" if I remember correctly.

The next 3 look like the katakana "ka" "ro" "e" "karoe" (no clue what that means)

The last two are kanji I do not recognize. Figure out what karoe spells and you might have a starting place. Or find someone who can read the last two kanji. (you being over there maybe you can)

It is all kanji, no kana. The two kana-like characters form one kanji, and the 'e' is also a kanji. It says Japan Manufacturing / Processing / Engineering of something I cannot read myself.

As for the plant, I do not think it is an Oil Refinery, but perhaps a low-level chemical or manufacturing plant of some sort. There are too many buildings for an oil refinery perhaps. Though all the open space may have housed the refraction plant.

Large scale Japanese manufacturing plants are often surrounded by local engineering works (as per above name) to support repairs and tool manufacturing not otherwise done in-house.

The easiest way to resolve would be to use Goo or Mapion to plot the location as it will certainly still be labeled accurately. A car navi will likely also have the details.

Regardless, it looks suitably apocalyptic!

Sounds like you know more characters than Taro Aso.

Impressive looking site. Looks like it's in a not-so-isolated area.

I tried googling about the location but ended up with a lot of japanese pages. And I do not read a lot of japanese. There`s not that much information because it is located in a rather small village and seems to be abandoned for quite a while. It is also awfully close to houses and traffic.

It certainly has had something to do with chemicals, lots of pipeworks, ditches, pools and signs that had chemical formulas and Ph values on them. Many od the signs were also in korean and some other asian languages, I take it they were using cheap foreign labor or something like that.

First I thought they had started to demolish it and then just stopped for some reason, but it seems that they only removed most of the machinery and didn`t bother with the actual buildings. When I get to use a decent computer, I`ll downsize the pictures a bit and add a few more that might give some hint what`s it all about.

If we can`t figure out what it is, I`ll leave it to the locals to explore better and add to the database. It is certainly worth being there for it`s size and complexity.

Some asking around and googling has led me to strongly suspect that this is a factory of Asian Pulp And Paper. Apparently they made paper and paper products there. That would explain the all the chemical containers and ditches and the massive size. I have to follow this lead and try to find more info later.

I'll actually get an hotel today, no more sleeping in internet cafes and parks, that should help. I'll also check places around Tokyo aswell.

I could probably solve a lot of the mystery for you if you can upload any of the Korean text.

I'm sorry, the only picture that I have of them only says "Do Not Enter" and the other contains some instructions about how to use a crane in a hall.

Nevertheless, I am now absolutely sure that this has been a paper factory of AP&P. Loads of thanks go to some of my japanese friends who helped to solve the mystery.

Which part of the pulp and paper process uses radioactive material? See picture 169...

Could have been a room where they x-rayed the pulp for any foreign objects that might have fallen in.
