ANZAC drain and the weird thing

On the 17/7/2009 A small group of us entered Melbourne's huge ANZAC drain, home to the Cave Clan and the ultimate underground party venue! Some of the coolest street art I have seen is in this drain. Including an absolutely massive mural of the Yellow submarine.
We set up about 100 tea light candles and started to play around with some different light-painting techniques. After that we headed out to the "weird thing" an abandoned car park that used to be the base for a gasometer. The carpark was a failed venture and has been abandoned for quite some time, though have heard that the site may be re-developed which is typical in Melbourne. We seem to relish any opportunity to destroy an areas significance and replace it with pre-cast concrete crap.
We returned to the ANZAC again last night as I wanted to take some pics in the curved red brick tunnel using ignited steel wool (leaves sparklers for dead!).
We were supposed to meetup with Bluetwistie and go explore some more vey interesting locales, but the missus ended up with an epic headache, which I probably caused doing lit up steel wool photos.
some pics from 17/7/2009 UE outing (I have yet to get last nights developed)

The main chamber, the light at the end is from the street outside, people walk past unaware of what lurks down the drain!

Myself playing with a ring of fire created with sparklers on a rig I machined up on a lathe at work.

The weird place abandoned car park.

Though not necessarily an urbex shot, this was done at the carpark using an LED key chain light and a blue and purple glows-stick.
I hope you guys like my photos, they are a lot better than my Mini-tenth ones!

Nice, nice effects too. The old lit steelo trick always provides entertainment. WTF is a 'gasometer' ?

You may think you can fly.....but you'd better not try it.

Thanks mate, I actually used about four of those cheap and nasty party sparklers for the ring of fire. I shot some photos last night that used lit up steel wool and they put that pic to shame ( I have to get them developed though).

A gasometer is a telescopic gas storage tank. The tanks height would adjust depending on how much gas was actually contained inside. I don't think there are too many of them around anymore. They were used to store natural gas not gasoline or petroleum products.

So the carpark was built utilising the base of a gas-holder tank like this one.
BTW I think the pic is of a tank in Germany somewhere.

Sort of. They were used to store coal (manufactured) gas. Which unlike natural gas, does not flow from a usually continuous source. Hence their demise, with gas systems moving to natural gas from coal gas.

Some gas companies do however use them to store natural gas sometimes I think though. This is the only explanation I've been able to think of for the sets still operational in the UK.

Victorians in particular will know the effect of no natural gas storage, as when the Longford Gas Plant went WHUMP, they went with out gas for two weeks...

I love gasometers.

There are still a few gasometers around, like this fairly small one still standing in Baltimore. It's not clear if this one is still in use.

I grew up with a gasometer tank that was part of the view out my bedroom window, that was over 300 feet tall. It was a major area landmark behind a shopping mall, and was torn down in 1984 after it sprang a leak.

Thanks for all the info about gasometers. I also remember seeing the remains of them at the old South Melbourne gasworks as well. Anyway back on topic, some more pics of a second trip down the ANZAC.

The old burning steel wool trick.

The main entry tunnel, showing off the beautiful brickwork.

I hope you know, lol, for your own benefit, that the tunnel gets bigger again n splits of to a nice variety of brick tunnels, about 250m up the low section where it splits. Well worth the back ache, n theres quite a few safe manhole covers to pop out of save you going back.

Thanks Siologen, next time I will make sure I go further than the main chamber. Hopefully tonight myself, Man underground and others will be heading to the maze.

There used to be an exit behind the Toorak library too, off Surrey Road perhaps. There was at least the day I took this:

We had to pull the guy on the left from waist-deep water he had stepped in, but we got there eventually. One day, I'd like to go back! See ya. Neko.

I think that may be one of the most impressive draining shots I've seen. Very nice!

Cheers for that, we have many more light-painting tricks up our sleeves.
Myself and Man_underground who also frequents this forum have recently started the Melbourne City Drain Painters or M.C.D.P
We are not into graff or tagging but our idea of painting is with light, you can see more of our draining pics here:

If anyone is from Melbourne and into draining then join our flickr group and we will invite you along. Also a big thanks to a certain member of the Cave Clan for some invaluable help and a guided tour of the great staircase drain.

The drain spirograph is very nice invention.
