Seems kinda contradictory to the spirit of the DB doesn't it?

Yes....yes....this location is mine! I shall not share it with UER! MWHAHAHAHA!

Just make the loacation viewable by full members only. I'd like to think we can trust our full members here...

Maybe in OH you can put all your locations in and expect them to stay virgin but somehow I get the impression you can't do that here in the northeast. I'm more than happy however to show a location to anyone who contacts me about it....after all if they're interested enough to see it they would ask me about it.

Its not just about vandalism. Its about the people that go. Any idiot can find a place in the DB, then go try to gain access, fail miserably, and then blow the place up. It only takes one person.

The better places are usually not shared for this reason. Do some research and you can find anything, anyways. The UEDB turns "Urban Exploration" into simple tourism

It's "flea market" and it's not taking trophies or even stealing, it's taking old dusty bullshit of no value. Best to leave it there instead of more clutter in the closet or under the bed, that won't even be looked at again a few months from now.

I agree with this in principle. However, while it's totally your choice of whether to enter your favorite locations in the database, the anti-DB attitude is a bit unnecessary. Urban exploration is never tourism. Many locations are dangerous places, and to boot, as this thread has highlighted, access points are up to individual explorers to discover.

To the best of my knowledge this site exists to unite Urban Explorers and help them share information about it, including the places they've been. As it's been suggested earlier, the Full Member status exists to weed out those who vandalize and "blow-up" locations, and I believe it does an excellent job of that. I just had my favorite location moved to "Full Members" only to help protect it. I trust those on this site that have reached Full Member status to protect it. I guess it's just an issue of trust. If you don't trust Full Members on this site to care about locations in the same way you do, I can't imagine why you're here.

You're totally right about doing research, but the database does more then tell you where a location is; it lists dangers, equipment you would need, stories from fellow explorers, and history. It's incredibly comprehensive. It's an asset to Urban Explorers everywhere. While you're right about "strangers" on the internet, Urban Exploration is what I would classify as a very fringe hobby that relatively very few people partake in. If a person has reached full member status on this site, they are globally one of only 2300 that has done so. I think the likelihood that one of the 2300 is out to blow up your locations is highly unlikely at best, and is downright paranoid to obsess over.

This is a pointless debate and its gonna lead to nothing but a thread lock so I'm gonna be the one to concede here.

You are totally right. Putting locations in one central database that can be easily searched by any anonymous, faceless person who says the right things to be deemed "trustworthy" is a good idea. Please, add more locations, so we no longer have to do any work finding places to explore. Maybe, some day, we can have a section in the db on how to get into each place. On that day, life will be perfect.

Glad you can agree with me. I'll be willing to talk about it on PM if you want to "concede" further. No hard feelings.

Calm down guys, this is a simple one to agree to disagree to. If you're cool with the DB then post locations, if not, then don't.

To be fair I have found not one location in the DB that I couldn't also find ample info about on google, deviantart, flickr, and wikianswers.

A location will get trashed whether its in the DB or not, as I'm sure Warbird can attest (Germain?). Ohio isn't unique in that regard, either. Most of the locations in the DB have been there longer than UER has, and people will find out about them whether they're there or not. I've found some new spots with the DB, but most that I've looked at are pretty common knowledge.

But still, if you want to keep a place secret, don't post it at all. Confucius said a secret one person knows is a secret. A secret two people know is not a secret. A secret three people know is news shouted to the world.

“We are not going to have the kind of cooperation we need if everyone insists on their own narrow version of reality. … the great divide in the world today … is between people who have the courage to listen and those who are convinced that they already know it all.”

Haha, it's not just giving me shit, I kind of deserve it, I did do exactly what you're not suppose to do. But I'm glad someone is willing to stick up for me. Thanks.

But again, thank you to people who politely showed me the error of my ways and offered me tips as how to better myself in the world of UE.

So we've a couple of top of ya game locations that required:
- quite expensive tools
- a large amount of gear
- a lot of time poking around to find access
- exposure to lots of risk in getting in
- exposure to even more risk securing more permanent access

In addition to this access is fragile and we're fully aware that each time we go there could be the last. Exploration of these sites is saved for when our friends visit from OS, special occasions etc. There's not a fucking chance I'm going to add this information to the UEDB. One person could quite easily ruin access we busted out balls to find/create/maintain etc.

If people want to know about the most interesting/difficult/rewarding/photogenic sites they should get off their asses and go FIND THEM. Like the people who explored them first did.

Well you did some stuff right.

You scouted and came back later

You followed rail tracks for interesting cultch

you used local folklore to find stuff.

you knew your surroundings and how vehicles could get in and out. Crossing the tracks on foot as an escape route is also keen.

When you said a kid a grade below you, I literally thought in the geographic sense, IE at a lower altitude.

railroads definitely lead to wonderful stuff...

I've been to Montreal some weeks ago, i will come back and take pictures of some amazing railroad yard. Those are the ones that will lead you to any abandoned industrial complex worth to be seen.

I think the most important part in scouting is to find a way to enter without causing any sort of damage, because this is where your exploration can become a "breaking and entering" if you don't do your homework.

Basically, i think there is three steps before going to a location :

1. Find a location
-know where it is
-know its history
-get some mean of transportation to get there

2. Find an entry
-know what obstacles are on your way
-know how to exit
-be assured you wont do anything that could damage the location itself (this could include breaking limbs of a tree you climbed, or damaging a door or lock, windows, all that stuff that are usually better left untouched)

3. Find the ways you might get into trouble
-Know what sort of neighborhood your in, place to park vehicle, etc...
-Be assured you have all the equipments needed for step 2, plus the other ones youll need for some locations (in case of asbestos, dark rooms, nice things you might want to photograph because they are so nice you want to show them to everybody, and all of those persons will want to go to this location with you to see it before their very eyes)
-Know what charges you could get for being there, what items you have on you that might not be good to have during police encounters (lockpicks, crowbars, bombs, blueprints, drugs, etc)

if you follow these three rules, i guess you'll be exploring without much worries in no time.

I'm really glad you are making good use of this learning experience, as some people would have taken most of the comments in this thread as an assault on their person. I think this is a good thread for anyone who's starting in exploration to read, as we went through most of the ethics in here.

Access all Areas is a rally good book to read so to grab all of this explorer's ethic code. It's your choice whether or not to follow whats is said in this book, but thats a great baseline to begin with.

Going through this specific location on various map databases there seems to be a "paper road" but there are differences of opinion of how it weaves through the parking lot.

This is a good example of scouting ahead of time... know that road's name, and bring a hackey sack. If "the man" looms near and you can't get to your car, get to the public property and start playing hacky sack!

Somewhere on the noob guide is what to say to the popo's (nothing!)

Also it appears the long bunch of "individual" buildings all glommed together have the same owner (tax records) so it would be dangerous to assume all the power is off, or that an alarm is unmonitored.

We then realized that the window was in fact a doubled layered glass door and that only the first layer had been broken. I used my mag light to break away the glass and look inside. We noticed a lot of perfect items that would be good to have as UE trophies. We decided then that we need to get into the bingo hall and explore the abandoned building.

I opened the door and took my pre-selected rock and moved toward the door. I cocked my arm and threw the rock at the door. I saw it hit in the bottom right corner and then watched the glass crack and stay standing, which I assumed was a good thing. It was a perfect hit.

Once at the doorway I again used my mag light to clear the doorway of glass.

I shoved the photo's into my back pocket and ran.
