First UE, First alarm.

Me and my friend have recently stumbled across this site and have become enthralled with the database and the entire idea behind UE. And since we have been so interested in the site, we have decided to try and do some UEing of our own. I wouldn't say we are as serious as some people are, we are more in it for an excuse to go into places we usually aren't suppose to go into.

The story I want to tell started last Thursday when we noticed/remembered about an old burnt down fleet market that's ruins lay behind a high end restaurant just inside the city of Portland, Maine's limits. We were driving home from my friends house when we noticed the bright restaurant and recalled the burnt down flee market. We soon parked the car outside the destroyed market and ventured inside for a closer look.

The flee market was wide open and covered in graffiti and other vandalism. The graffiti is mostly done by experienced artists looking for a canvas. Some others threw in some "smoke weed" tags and other juvenile phrases. The roof was collapsed the floor was rotting away. But we kept on going anyway. After I tried to take some photo's with my blackberry but realized it was too dark even for the flash off of my phone. We did a quick loop around the building saw some more graffiti and located an old train stop that was long out of business. But that was about it for the market. We were ready to head home.

We left the building and headed back for the car. As I opened the door to get inside I noticed a shattered window leading into the building that was connected to the flee market, a Bingo Hall that had gone out of business around the same time the flee market had burned (not sure if the closing is related to the fire). I pointed it out to my friend and we decided to take a closer look. We then realized that the window was in fact a doubled layered glass door and that only the first layer had been broken. I used my mag light to break away the glass and look inside. We noticed a lot of perfect items that would be good to have as UE trophies. We decided then that we need to get into the bingo hall and explore the abandoned building.

We left that night and waited for the next day to come. When it did we gathered another close friend and set out toward the bingo hall again. We used the extra man we had acquired that day as a lookout, standing at the only automotive entrance while my friend and I drove up to the damaged doors. We parked the car in the same spot as the night before (about 30 or 40 feet from the glass doors). We waited until a kid about a grade below us and a few cars from the restaurant left our line of sight before I made my move.

I opened the door and took my pre-selected rock and moved toward the door. I cocked my arm and threw the rock at the door. I saw it hit in the bottom right corner and then watched the glass crack and stay standing, which I assumed was a good thing. It was a perfect hit.

I ran to the car and we sped off, picking up the lookout. Later that night we would return.

Once the sun fell and the cover of night was available we returned. This time we parked behind the flee market and across the train tracks in a Chinese restaurant parking lot. We crossed the tracks (we still had me, and my two friends). We didn't go through the flee market despite the fact that it would bring us almost in front of the bingo hall doorway. We went around. My friend who acted as the lookout stopped to make a phone call and smoke a cigarette, he stated that he would catch up. We moved up to the cracked door way. We encountered no resistance from law enforcement or civilians.

Once at the doorway I again used my mag light to clear the doorway of glass. We were ready to enter. I went into the hall after my friend. It was a strange feeling, it being my first real time breaking into a building. I scanned the room and looked for anything of interest. I found some pictures that I would later find out were pictures of old people playing bingo (great find...). My friend found a cigar case and an old glass jug that had antique dust crusted on it and cobwebs infesting the inside. Everything seemed to be going fine until my friend pointed at the wall to the left of the entrance about 8 feet up on the ceiling. I didn't see it because I noticed he was moving toward the exit. I heard him yell then that it was motion sensor, or at least he thought it was. I shoved the photo's into my back pocket and ran.

We ran around the flee market again (the long way) and circled back to the Chinese restaurant and into the car. We were winded by the time we got back. Our other friend had caught up with as we were leaving the bingo hall.

We were at a cross roads now. My friend could have sworn that it was a motion sensor, but I didn't see anything and no alarm sounded and no one came to out to investigate (the restaurant hold no ties to the bingo hall or flee market, so I doubt they were behind security). We wanted so badly to go and explore more of the bingo hall and acquire more goods and take photos. We talked it over and decided that the next day we would return and do the same thing again and investigate the supposed motion sensor again.

The next day rolled around (the 3 of us were again there). We parked in the same place and walked the same route to the entrance. This time there were some losers in the parking lot drinking and getting ready to drive home, and we had to wait until they were ready to break the law and drive away while intoxicated. They left by yelling at us and saying some words I couldn't understand as they did. We walked up the doorway now and noticed it was perfectly opened and no one had disturbed the site. We were pleased with this finding and continued.

My friend stepped into the bingo hall first, I followed and the third member would follow me. I entered and listened and watched as my friend pointed out the motion detected. It was indeed a motion detector. It was a beige panel a little bit bigger then a light switch panel with 3 or 4 red LED strips and a red LED light positioned above those. It was blinking. We knew it had detected us, so we knew we would have to keep this trip about 5 minutes in length.

As we turned to face the building's interior again my friend stepped through the broken door. I don't know what set it off. But as soon as he entered an alarm started to ring. There was no words spoken, there was hardly time to mentally document the events unfolding. I remember leaving last and being behind my friends by about 20 feet. I also thought I heard the alarm eminating from the light post between the restaurant and the bingo hall (about 50 yards from the door and connected by electrical wire). Mt friends for some reason ran around the bingo hall. I, with my trusty mag light, ran up the stairs of the flee market. I first ran into a wooden post that was suppose to provide support for the ceiling. I quickly dashed under it and ran on top of the collapsed roof. I jumped across a few holes in the floor and landed in the back doorway. I carefully stepped down the makeshift piece of plywood used as an access point and leaped over some tall grass, ensuring I didn't break any bones on unknown ground under the grass. I landed and sprinted directly across the train tracks and into the area behind the chinese restaurant where I would wait for about 20 seconds for my friends to catch up. We got in the car and drove off, back to my house.

The experience was scary at some points, but now I look back at it and realized how exciting it was, even though we got away with little to no bragging material or photos.

I guess now I would like to take the time to ask if anyone on these forums has any theories as to how the alarm system we encountered works and why it only went off the second time we entered. Also, if anyone has any tips for me and my friend, let me know.

I would also like to say thanks to anyone who actually read all of that, haha. It's nice to be on this forum and website. Thank you!

It's not easy being cheesy.

First B&E, First alarm.

Fixed it for you.

One good reason the alarm may have only sounded the second time is that after the first time the property was damaged, the owner set up the system to catch/deter scumbag vandals.

Just so you know, the following things are generally frowned on around these parts, and are liable to get you roundly berated (outside the friendly walls of the rookie forum):

1. Damaging sites, including to gain entry
2. Taking stuff from sites

That said, welcome to the forums!

You crossed a very fine line that night...

You went from simple tresspassing to full out breaking & entering coupled with theft/burgalry/vandalism.

Often times Closed/Out of Business != Abandoned as someone still owns and maintains the property.

As for the alarm. I don't know too much about them. We were once at a site at night and we walked all over in front of the motion sensors, or we happened to luck out and were out of their range, but nothing happened.

Then returning again within 10 seconds of making entry we tripped the sensor and the while site lit up with huge floodlights. Sometimes sensors are just goofy and if far enough away you can walk really slow at night and they won't pick you up.

Okay guys, I'm sure he gets the point now and I'm sure he's learned from this thread. Everyone starts somewhere. I remember starting out too and any business that closed down looked like a good target, but closed gas stations, convenient stores, etc usually aren't really worth. That's because they're usually not really "abandoned" just changing hands. Though I guess a bingo hall sounded kind of interesting.

Though breaking windows to get in something is pretty sketchy. If it's all boarded up, prying back a board is one thing, though straight up smashing windows is completely different.

Here's a tip. Aim your future UE's more toward industry and infrastructure, not retail or general commerce.

Another tip: I've never needed to break a window to enter a building I really wanted to get into. There is always a way, sometimes it's obvious, sometimes it's not, sometimes you just shouldn't be B&E'in into the place.

Let's bear in mind that this is the Rookie Forum - please try to get our collective point of view (such as it is) across in a civil manner, rather than just flaming, tempting as that is.

</goody two-shoes>

To steal a quote from Shane that makes a solid point:

What I do care about is what people talk about and how they represent the hobby as a whole. It is far more important that the we continue to be seen as harmless trespassers by police, building owners, the press, and other authorities. You can be sure we'd have a lot more trouble exploring if we were collectively known to be thieves.

Of course this is bad representation of our hobby, but it's our job to ensure those who do this learn from their mistakes, as nobody besides us and the police will teach them.

The first explorations I've done we're at my high school and involved lockpicks. The security guard caught me once, but i managed to give him some scrap metal instead of my tools (putting them in my pocket, then giving him something else, as he is not allowed to frisk me). Of course he could have called the police and he'd be in a position to do it, and i would have been in a lot of trouble, but i was lucky he didn't.

This enabled me to see most of the candy at my school, although we never found the basement (a teacher spread a rumor about the basement's entry being in some closet in a classroom, and we had to empty the whole closet on a lunch break, only to find out this entry was either removed or it never existed). Now I know that patience is a virtue in UE. You got to see the place, sure, but you also got to find your way in the most possibly correct way. Timing is another one to have : there's that place you want to see, and you need to see it before it's gone - sometimes the only way is to contact the owner and tell him your concern about this building going away, and i'm sure he will show you around the place.

We always learn from our mistakes, and this is i am doing this hobby ; because i never stop learning.
