Knotted Rope

I'm making a short knotted rope, and I can't seem to find what would be the proper knot that would use the minimal amount of length or rope in the knot, have the least strain on the bends, and the maximum amount of surface area to grip from.

I'd use a figure 8, but that knot is orientated along the length of rope, and I need something that is perpendicular to the length of the rope for gripping.

Anyone here have a good idea for what to use?

Is your use for gripping to climb it, or do you want an aider type loop?

For gripping, a double or triple overhand knot works well on some types of rope. They're usually big enough to effectively grip onto. I'm not too sure about the rope strain on the bends, but for most, it should be okay to use.

You might also want to consider an In-line Figure 8 or Butterfly Knot to make a loop to provide a rest point at some places. Also, consider learning how to make a Prussick line as a safeguard incase you slip.

it's just mostly for small shit, probably 20-30 feet long or so, 1/2" static utility rope. Mostly for just tossing over stuff, throwing a carbine on it, and tightening it up to climb for those places that are pretty close to getting into, but there's nothing to help you climb.

the triple overhand looks pretty good, I think I'll give that a try.

I once found a knot that allowed you you tie loops big enough for hands/feet to make a quick rope ladder. They were nice because when tightened down by standing on them, you could still easily untie the knot without it being stuck or putting a nasty kink in the rope.

I don't remember the knot it used though. I can't seem to find it on the net either. It was really quick and you could just work your way down the rope tying a loop every 1 feet.

I know the knot you're talking about Trent, I think it's the butterfly loop. Make a loop, put two twists in it, bring the loop around the back of the twists, put the loop through the middle of the two twists, work it until you have the right size loop, tighten. I'll see if I can find some good directions.

Edit: Here.

Yup, that's it! Perfect. Now I remember you could also aim which side of the rope the loop would be on so that it's on alternating sides like a ladder.

Mario, I dunno if this is what you were looking for or not, but still a good tip.

For that kind of crap we have used just an overhand knot with a loop. You can grab the knot or the loop, and also stick your foot in the loop. This knot will weaken the rope, but any decent half inch rope should be plenty. We've gotten away with this for years on 3/8 yellow nylon hardware store shit rope. Some of this is still in use after most of a decade and I'm sure you've seen it by bridges and jails and sewers.

The butterfly is stronger, but the double overhand consumes less rope. If it is only body weight (not falls) dbl. oh. is fine.

You can easily use tubing to keep the loops open with this method too.
