| | "The Smoke Stacks" - New Orleans, LA < on 7/13/2009 6:38 AM >
| | | I was down in New Orleans last week and got a chance to check out this huge industrial abandonment. Not really sure what it was, but the local kids call it "The Smoke Stacks". All I had with me was my iPhone, but I managed a few decent photos. Here are coordinates: 29.930075, -90.06433 (Protip: Paste them into Google Maps and check out the satellite photo.) | | | I apparently don't have sufficient privileges to view that thread, but judging from the title, it probably is..

| | | It is indeed the same place. Funny, I didn't know everyone referred to it as the smoke stacks, but every time someone asks me about it, I always start with, "You know those two big smoke stacks...?" Doesn't take any more than that. I remember sitting on the roof of an abandoned hospital on the Westbank last year as Hurricane Ike's outer bands were passing over the city. I could see the smoke stacks across the river, and apparently someone had the same idea we did, as I could just barely see a flashlight beam bouncing around up on the roof. We flashed our light at them, but we couldn't tell if they flashed theirs back or if they were just moving about through all the stuff that's up there (most likely the latter, and we could barely make it out anyway). We didn't want to draw attention so we quit trying after that, but I always wonder who was up there watching the storm. Good times in The Sunken City.

| | | Yeah, these were all taken with an iPhone 3G. Word is the camera on the new 3GS is decently improved (3 MP over the 3G's 2 MP, not to mention video). I actually killed my iPhone a few days ago by falling off a bike, so I may end up upgrading after all...

that sounds like so much fun!
Cool pictures, and that looks like a really fun place to explore. Like a playground for grownups.
