| | Should I ditch the keys? < on 7/9/2009 2:33 AM >
| | | So, I'm a bit new to UE, and my first question is admittedly a bit of a trivial one. I used search, and couldn't find this anywhere, but if I missed it, kindly point me in the right direction. Aside from Urbex, my other main hobby is magic. Being a magician, I have a Smith and Wesson handcuff key (that I occasionally use for tricks) on my key ring. I know there's some discussion about the ramifications of having things like lock picks and scanners on your person if and when you're caught, so I'm wondering what would happen if, hypothetically, I were caught trespassing, searched and the cop(s) found the key. Is this illegal? Would it up the charges in any way? Should I even be worrying about this? Any input would be appreciated. I'm wondering if I shouldn't take it off my key ring when I go exploring, just in case.

| | | Its pretty easy to take a key off a key ring. My vote would be to take it off even though I highly doubt a cop would care. Good luck!

| | | Having a little police contact in my years of exploring, I have yet to have my keys analyzed by a cop. I'd say "it probably doesn't matter" but really, meta's answer is more correct.

| | | Thanks for the awesome replies, guys. I'll probably end up just taking it off, or taking my spares. Easy fix. Just in case.

| | | That, unfortunately, is much more difficult. And you have to be, er, flexible, as you often can't control how the handcuffs are put on. Right now it takes me a solid 10 mins to get both of them with that method.

| | | meta's answer is perfect. But, of course, police don't check yours keys 99.999999% of the time unless you're dealing with a dick who searches through EVERYTHING you have on you. I have a bump key mixed in together with my house, car, storage, and work keys and they have never thought once to check them.

| | | 90% of the time people get in trouble with cops for UE, they aren't handcuffed or rigorously searched beyond (what's that flashlight-shaped bulge in your pocket? and that three-legged metal object in your backpack? The crowbar shaped thing we saw you pulling out of the trunk?) - so I imagine the chances of you getting in trouble for having a handcuff key are so tiny as to be ridiculous...on the other hand, it presumably doesn't cost you anything to take it off when you leave hte house to UE.

| | | Presumably, any cop worth his or her salt would relieve you of your keys before cuffing you, so what would it matter even if they knew it was there? "Yes, officer, I own handcuffs. Me and Osama like to cuff each other."
