How to handle hobos?

Well, how does everyone here handle hobos? Im sure everyone has had varied experiences and dealings with the homeless. Also, if anyone sticks it out for a little while in this thing called Urbex. The chances are pretty good to see them.

Personally, i always announce my pressence when i enter a area(if im not worried about it back firing). I always try to be respectful to the hobo and treat them with dignity. But in case's that they dont like me, i try to accommodate. I also keep a ASP and some OC spray on my person just in case. In the end my camera and my self(including anyone with me) take priority. No location are worth thouse things.(i know say "awwwww" and get the warm and fuzzy feeling like the sunday morning cartoons used to do). So what do you all have to say?

So i say, Merah!

One time in the camera store I work at I sold a sturdy tripod by telling the customer that you can kill a hobo with it.

Never ran into any. But most of my exploration is in rural/suburban buildings. Even the cities I explore in are too small to host any kind of hobo population.

Was that an honest endorsement? If so, I might buy one. ;p

And at last I resolved to scale that tower, fall though I might;
Since it was better to glimpse the sky and perish,
Than to live without ever beholding the day.

I remember a handwritten note on the entry to one decrepit building: "This is our home - please announce yourself if you've come to visit." Seemed to me like a reasonable request.

If I was really created in God’s image then when God was a boy he wanted to grow up to be a man, a good man, and when God was a man, a good man, he started telling the truth in order to get honest responses.

I've ran into them once or twice and never had a problem with them. They'll usually ask you for a dollar or a cigarette or something which is a reasonable request given the fact that you are taking pictures of where they live.

yeah, no real issues myself. I've run across 'em a few times. Be polite and treat them like fellow human beings for fuck sakes, not some kind of shambling leper. Respect them, and usually there will be no issue. Give 'em a dollar, a smoke or a beer and they will be your best friend / guide.

I carry a hobo protection system with several stages of escalation back up.

1. a cigarette, or a couple of bucks.
2. a mickey of whiskey
3. pepper spray
4. VERY large heavy tripod.

Just move it now...you know how these things go.

Anyway, I remember barging in a couple times on some homeless person (usually younger person) in SF. Don't worry about it. Just say sorry and go about your business.

I don't think I would yell or announce anything. After all, that would freak me out more if I was living somewhere. I'd rather be startled but be able to see you than know someone was there and have no clue where they were. If that makes sense.

I freak out because I'm afraid of the super despirate and/or crazy hobos that would rob you blind and not even think twice.

Exactly. This is why you find two and pay them to brawl. Win-win situation.

It's like a cockfight, only better.
