Easy way to find UE locations

Wikimapia. Maybe I'm the only one who didn't know about this, but it's pretty handy. I have seen places on google earth and wondered if it was abandoned, and this can sometimes tell you for sure. I now have 3-4 new locations to check out in my town!

Wikimapia is my favourite online map site. The best part is you can easily copy the URL to pass it on to other people.

I can't honestly say I've ever discovered anything abandoned using it, but I've used it to track down the exact location of abandonments.

I use the Melways (melbourne street directory) and look for storm canals, creeks that disappear as well as canals that go under a street and don't resurface. I then go onto Google maps or whereis.com.au and check out the satellite photo of any area I am interested in. Using this method I have found the Mini-tenth, Maze, Great staircase drains as well as some promising drain entrances that I am yet to check out in Brighton and Dandenong south.

I prefer Bing maps. I like the bird's eye view function. Unfortunately, it's not available for every location. Bing's aerial photos aren't as good as Google's or Wikimapia's, though.

I also use Bing, or what used to be Local Live. The bird's eye view is really helpful in scouting out locations and getting a good idea of the size of a certain building or campus. The fact that you can rotate between aerial, bird's eye, and street directions is also really helpful. But I agree, the aerial views aren't as crisp or clear as some other map website's.

The trick is searching "abandoned" and "closed". Of course if nothing is noted in your area, then you're out of luck.

Well that was useful, at least for finding places in North Korea.

The reference stacks at my local county libraries have brought up some good ones. My personal favorite is that of the decommissioned military bases in proximity to me. It's amazing how much information you can glean from government issued clean-up documentation, which is all freely available for public reference.

This is right on. The county atlases for my county are available in the reference area of the library, and some of them even have a designation for a "unused" building, giving you a timeline of what a building is and when it went abandoned.

If we're talking about the best way to find new locations, I've found more by randomly driving around on a scooter than anything else. I'm hopefully going to pick up a new one today.

I didn't know about this either, this will definitely help me out since I'm fairly new to urbex and need help finding buildings.

That's awesome! I already found a few different places to look into.

I still think the best way to find places is this:

"The time of getting fame for your name on its own is over. Artwork that is only about wanting to be famous will never make you famous. Fame is a by-product of doing something else. You don't go to a restaurant and order a meal because you want to have a shit."
