The story features ornery ol' coot Orval "Hoppy" Ray, one of the last holdouts. He owned the local pool hall, where he hung disused mining equipment on the walls. He stayed until one day, while he was out eating breakfast, his own son snuck in and moved everything out of the house -- to spare him the pain of moving out himself. The son's own children, like many others, have highly elevated blood lead levels. He says he moved to Miami "under protest." But he's easing to the idea a bit. "They told me they were gonna move me to Miami," he joked, "and I said, 'Over my dead body, you will!' " He continued, changing tone: " 'Oh, well,' I said, 'I've been dead from the waist down now for 10 years anyway.' " I hope to live long enough to be an ornery ol' coot like Hoppy Ray. I was out there a couple of weeks ago with a couple of friends. We took a ton of pictures. Most of the town is abandoned, but there are still a few people living in houses there. The school, city hall, and all businesses are shut down for good. Numerous structures in the area have "TBC" or "To Be Condemned" spray painted on them, which I can only guess means they will tear them down. They havent torn anything down yet, but they have started moving a few homes. There will be a full post and write up about it on abandonedok.com here soon. Here are a few pics...
