I've been asked to speak to the Austin Photography Group on night photography & light-painting at their upcoming monthly meeting at 7 PM on July 12th, on the 3rd floor of "Book People" at the corner of 6th & Lamar in Austin. I'll talk about my background and influences (never forget your influences!), the aesthetic appeal of the genre, but most of the time will be spent talking technique, which will include breaking down some of my images, as well as brief live light-painting demo, at the request of the group's organizer.

If you're in the Austin area, come on out! The Austin Photography Group is an open meetup group and free to join. Hope to see you there!

More information on the meeting, as well as the Austin Photography Group can be found here...

Is there a "field trip" scheduled or are you just giving a presentation at the bookstore?

It'll just be a demo in the meeting room. I've done this sort of things a couple times before, and as I explained to the organizer, these type of "demos" never really turn out very impressively, but he still wanted to do it anyway. More instructive will be the section where I will break down a few images and explain the techniques involved.

Book People is an awesome place to start with, so it's sure to be great. Right across the street is the flagship Whole Foods store (and headquarters), with moving-sidewalk ramps to take you and your shopping cart down into the parking garage beneath. And the debut Austin UER meetup is earlier in the day -- Austin is going to be even more full of awesome than usual.

I think this session should be recorded and made available online for the benefit of the folks not fortunate enough to attend.

If they'd let you do the demo anywhere in the building, there is a "crawl space" under the seating area (set up like a stage) in the children's reading area. I think the crawl space is actually intended to be used by kids (just another cool aspect of the place). It seems like the entries into the space would make for good light-painting, except that you probably can't get the area dark enough.

Hmm...some interesting ideas! Only problem is, they want me tethered to my laptop, which will be tethered to a projector so everyone can see the results. The group is too big to do it without a projector too; there's already almost 50 confirmed attendees. All this means that I'm pretty much gonna be tied down to the front of the room where the meeting is held.

I thought about doing a separate event the following night in the field, for an additional fee. There's a good place to do something like that down there too, but I didn't expect much response for a Monday night, so I 'abandoned' the idea. Still gonna shoot somewhere Monday with a friend of mine down there who just beat cancer a couple months ago!

In the kiddie area they use the crawl space for puppet shows and what not for reading to the kids. I think they do it on a fairly regular basis. I'd love to come by and check out the class, but I'm actually starting belly dancing classes this Sunday and they run Sunday evenings for the next 7 weeks.

And yay for your friend getting over cancer! It's definitely something to celebrate! A close friend of mine has been officially in remission for about 1.5 years now, we're hoping to continue that trend. She highly recommends against it, turns out cancer really sucks.
