recent drain trips

Various drains as seen in various other threads..
Primary light source in most is my Sigma flash used as a torch. Some lighting in first six shots are assisted by terapr0. All shot with Canon Rebel XT with Sigma 10-22mm lens. To see my ridiculous tripod setup, head over to the AotU's site

Here is a critique:

1. The flare is distracting. I think it is a nice composition, but I don't like the person or the lighting in it. To me, it is irritating to have a flashlight in my face, which is what this is a picture of.

2. This is nice, but you have red fringing (and no, I am not talking about the red light on the right).

3. I don't like light painting, but I know many do. Basically, I am saying I would like it better if the light on the left was kept still. It makes it look more like a snapshot than a planned photo.

4. Again with the light in my eyes.

5. I don't like light painting (my bias) and I also don't really like shots of people taking pictures, especially, for some reason, if there is a tripod involved.

6. I think this would be nicer if you worked on the red fringing around the light source.

7-10. I think these are the best. I especially like the reflection in 10.

hey, no need for personal attacks, eh? Just kidding. But the flare is a keeper for me. I find it a more effective and more interesting way to light up scene. More interesting because it's more interesting than standing behind the camera and blasting light ahead. I would have liked the flare to be smaller, but the foreground would not have been as bright that way. It's more effective because I only had to blast my flash twice at its widest spread and I was done.

The red fringing in the second shot might actually be a result of the red light. I don't really remember, but it looks like it's pointed outward and in a 13 second exposure, can create an effect on surfaces around it.

The third shot was a laziness factor. The "painted part" is my headlamp because I moved before the shutter had closed and I didn't feel like taking another shot.

4-6 are just shots I took while my colleagues were either setting up or taking their own shots. Not something I'd use in my portfolio of course.

thanks for the critique

I understand that much of what I said is personal taste. However, I like the critique forum to contain actual critiques, not just kudos.

I would love to take a 10-22 draining... I love that lens.

I love the first shot. Great composition, but the flare kind of kills it for me. Its draws my eye in, and takes away from all the beautiful details in the shot. Same deal with number 6. Great shot, fantastic details in the wall, but my eyes are drawn to the light source. I like how you've broken the center composition in the last one, but wish there was a little more on the left, and a little less on the right. critique aside, cool stuff.
