given the choice of being bothered or NOT bothered, I usually go with NOT.
although for the most part there's no reason to be afraid of them and they are sometimes a great resource for info.

one night in philly, 2 beers got us, lets say, a hand opening the door and a look-out for the duration of our visit.

There is a good percentage of the homeless population which suffer from schizophrenia. Some are messed up on drugs, but most of them are just down on their luck and can't afford to get on their feet. In my experience, most are harmless, but like wild animals, they can be unpredictable, and you should keep your distance if possible. (I am not calling homeless people animals, they are human beings.)

I've run into a few mentally ill persons. I've never had any trouble however, just take it slow and talk w/ them. Then again I'm sorta used to it....working at a mental hospital help :p.

Haha, sure sounds like you're calling them wild animals. Generally, I'd say you're right about the unpredictability thing though.

You're not alone in being afraid of the homeless. Some can be quite territorial, while others could care less what you do. I always carry a pack of cigarettes with me while exploring to use as "peace offerings" to any homeless I come across.

Just treat them like human beings. A little compassion can go a long way if they aren't coked out or a few fries short of a happy meal.

They are more afraid of you than you are of them.

I'm not really sure what an "aspurgers" is, but I'm gonna take it in context to mean your people skills suck.

Try going to a bar/club and start talking to random people. Hit on the women, make small talk with the guys about sports or something, I dunno. If your lucky you might even end up getting a quickie in the back!

I have met some really cool homeless people. As with anyone you have just met you need to be cautious.

Homeless folks don't have much and tend to be very protective of it for a reason. Then again rich people are very protective to. The rich never share and the majority of the homeless people I have met will share whatever they have if you just show them some respect. I would rather take the time to get to know a homeless person and listen to the tales they have to tell than spend 5 seconds with a rich snob who gives me a big fuck you at the first turn.

A mirage is not an optical illusion. It is a real phenomenon, and one can take photographs of it. The interpretation of the image, however, is up to the fantasy of the human mind.

i wouldnt actualy blame the homeless for being so protective. with the recent storys of homeless being murdured for no good reason and whatnot.

HOLLY HILL, Fla. — Two Florida teenagers found a homeless man in the woods and beat and kicked him to death "to have something to do," according to Volusia County (search) sheriff's investigators.

Christopher Scamahorn (search), 14, and Jeffery Spurgeon (search), 18, confessed to beating the 53-year-old victim with their fists and sticks and kicking him, sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught said Sunday.

The pair were charged with murder Sunday. Spurgeon was being held without bail in Daytona Beach. Scamahorn taken to a juvenile jail.

The teens said they attacked the man "for fun" and "to have something to do," Haught said. They went back to the woods three times after the initial attack to beat the man again, he said.

The victim was found Saturday, and the condition of the body indicated he had been dead for several days. An autopsy Sunday determined that the man died from blunt force trauma to the head and body, Haught said.

The victim's name has not been released

Try not to look or act vulnerable. It always helps having someone with you as there's less chance of anything escalating. You'll find the odd few who may see you as an easy victim to mug if you're a small guy. But the majority of them just don't want to be bothered, some will ask for change/cigarette or something and some won't bother.

Just keep your distance, be cool with them, treat them like a human being, and they'll tend to let you on your way without much problem. They're not so much to worry about if they feel you're not a threat to them. I'd be more worried about running into a group of thugs trashing and stuff before a homeless guy who's just trying to survive and a place he feels he can call home.

We had a homeless guy living at my old hospital, I would give him food and let him use the shower in the one out building. In turn he would returning the favor by keeping the trash picked up on the campus. I sometimes wonder where he ended up once they closed the hospital.

They are human beings just like us and anyone of us could end up like that.

I think I read a statistic that almost 40% of the population is one paycheck away from being homeless. That was a couple of years ago but I would not be surprised if that percentage has not gone up since the bank/credit/mortgage crisis of the past year or so.

Yeah it's sad what happens and its scary to think it could happen to any of us. At the same time however I believe you control your finances (with the exception of hospital bills. You cant control if you get cancer.)

Despite them being homeless you have to try to respect them. They will be much nicer to you that way anyway.

I see this one homeless guy all the time and I've been tempted to give him the 10,000 pennies in my car. (I don't need em and I know he can make better use for em)
