Just starting with photography

Hi everyone, I would like to show a couple of pictures i've taken this weekend, just to know how high or low are my basic photography skills.

The camera is a sony DSC-F828, i dont have any clue as if its good or not. I dont feel like its particularly good for a digital, but ill do with that for now.

Its two sets of four, the first one we were at a quarry for a school project (filming a zombie movie). The second one its from yesterday, i went to check out some "drain" i wanted to go in as a kid but was too frightened to, only to see its now way too small for me and that its just a tube of plastic getting the water in a ditch. So here are the shots.

(5) I would have crawl through that as a kid... This is probably just to collect the water from the property un there

#1 is quite good.

#2 should have been taken at sunrise/sunset for the contrast and color. get better sky.

#3 I like the depth of field you chose, but not the subject of the can.. Maybe if you just left the foot?

#4 sunset/sunrise again. try less sky if its a traditional landscape... focus on the land detail, unless something exciting is going on up there.

#5 is interesting, but use the thirds rule here and try to get a better sky. or photoshop...

#6 carnage and wilderness. i like it.

#7 & #8 like G.U. said... there should have been a head in there.

Keep up the good work. Just remember not every pic is going to be a winner, so take a ton of them. It takes a bit of practice, but you are on the right track!

Very nice!

You should try tweaking the colors and stuff. You can find a free, very basic version of photoshop at http://www.photoshop.com I use it all the time. I would have loved having that resource when I first started in photography.

I took much more pictures than these 8. I wouldn't last very long if id be running on film.

For the landscape shots, number 4 was taken from very high (climbed up like 150 feet and couldn't get a good angle without all the sky) If you look closely, you can see the belt conveyer from shot #1 in the left of the picture (right of the orange ... thing... don't know the English term for it, we say "mechanical shovel" in french)

As for my camera, i really cant complain, this used to be the top shit when my father bought it a couple years back. Its huge, but i do with it. Anybody know a good thread that compares digital and film? I might want to go to film if its worth it once i can shoot good pictures without wasting 3 shots of each of them

Edit - - Bandit : i photographed the can because my friend was going to try and stand on it, but it didn't hold his weight. I tried myself, behind rather light and having a good balance, and it couldn't bare my weight... i don't know if there was a default in the cans, cause that used to hold my weight pretty good a couple of years back.

When you say "depth of field", that is where to focus is at, right? because my camera has some annoying auto focus function, and the manual focus doesn't seem to work at all

The landscapes are inspiring and I have to say I am a sucker for the urban decay shots. I did notice that the camera in some wasn't quite straight but I think it more so adds a bit to it. Like instead of just showing the world most people see it you go from a slightly different viewpoint and that injects a bit of much needed surrealism into the mix. Great job. 9/10

Oh I'm sorry. Did I break YOUR concentration!

Since you're just getting started, I'll give you two wonderful rules to follow most of the time that will automatically make your pictures better.

1. This applies mainly to the first two shots. Foreground. I keep wanting to see what's below the bottom of each picture. Try to compose your picture so that you have some sort of foreground. It creates a sense of depth, gives a better sense of scale and pretty much completes your image. Think of it like a story. A good story has a beginning, a middle and an end. So should each picture. Your foreground being the beginning, the bulk of your subject is obviously the middle, and something near the top to either frame your shot or draw your eye toward your main subject. This often applies best to landscape type shots.

2. Rule of Thirds. If you divide your screen up into thirds, Your main subject "should" (general rule of photography and doesn't necessarily have to be followed to make a good picture) be placed on one of those 1/3 lines. Take the helmet picture for example, whether you knew it or not, you followed this rule pretty well here. The helmet is pretty well right at the 2/3 line.

Look at your picture on your camera screen before you press your shutter. Watch your composition and try to use your rule of thirds then have at it! You'll see a noticible improvement right away in how pleasing your pictures are to look at.

Thanks to all of you guys for those nice critiques! What do you think of number 5-6-7? I think those are the worst of the lost, they seem unfocused and badly composed.

By the way, i learned how to use my camera (exposition, aperture, and stuff, also manual focus, because auto focus was a pain) Now i have to learn how to use these parameters

For me, they're a little boring. I liked the story behind the drain and that makes up for the not-so-interesting shot of it, but the shot itself is a little blah.

Each of those three look like you were standing up, aimed and fired.

Try mixing it up next time. Get low. Get close. Try taking it from a different side. Try a few different things. Don't just always stand straight up from one spot and snap the shot.

Keep experimenting and keep posting!
