| | Respirator or dust mask? < on 5/7/2009 7:26 PM >
| | | So I haven't really been wasting my time with sir filtering when I go out to abandonments, mainly because they're small and I don't stay for too long. But now that I can drive and get out a bit more, I plan to do a lot more this summer. So here's my question. Do I really need a full on respirator, or will a simple dust mask suffice? I don't exactly have a huge budget so I don't want to spend more than I need to.

| | | Going in a place with asbestos, I'm sure the cost of a $40 respirator, amortized over many years, should be affordable vs. the cost of mesothelioma.

| | | The respirator is soooo worth it. the dust masks dont keep out the most dangerous things. buy a respirator.

| | | A respirator is the way to go. there is a reason they have a silicon seal on them, its so that the whole affair is air-tight. this in mind, its worth noting that facial hair that is under this seal renders it less effective. in industry where this kind of thing means survival, these masks are checked using a smoke chamber on each person--theyre fitted. Also, as was mentioned passively above, there are different filters rated for different hazards--know what hazards you'll encounter and purchase accordingly. I do not use a respirator--I am pretty much exclusively interested in drains and havent found a situation where I would need one in the context of "UE"... However, I have worked as a glass blower and as a ceramicist, and have used a full range of respirators in my experiences with those materials. Having seen a mentor die a protracted and painful death (as a result of working in a time where the hazards of the materials he was working with werent widely known or spoken about), I highly advocate their use. The cost is minimal (at least here in the us, between 25 and 50 dollars for the most common types, filters included) and its an easy precaution to take.
