consider the finer options here....it is not illegal if you are part of a club that picks locks for sport or a hobby.

well, at least my understanding is there is some greyish loopholium type workable space here. So you'd need to go to a little effort to establish some visible evidence. Set up a domain site, couple of shonky pics of you and friends with pizza box in the background sitting around a house picking for fun etc... add some non existent contact details or mail address etc...

this wont help if you are caught trespassing or in the act etc... but being in transit, if they are concealed reasonabley and are in a bag it may circumvent some degree of trouble down the line.

i know with laser pointers here they were banned but the loophole also includes membership to an astronomy club with some basic principles involved.

That is a lot of work. think about it just to be able to bring your picks anywhere on the off chance someone will ask you "hey sir, why do you have lock picking devices?" you are going to create a fake website, fake documents and put fake contact info there? because isnt forging documents sor of illegal? and this will get you deeper than just having a set of picks.

My name is Chris Hansen with Dateline NBC's To Catch a Predator. Why don't you have a seat over there?

And Pravus : you might want to try hook picks if you like the diamonds, they are even better for spp. Diamonds are more for raking while hooks give a better feel.

Yea, the hook has come in hand many a time, I carry a jackknife so it's got one on there.. I also made a diamond pick from a hacksaw that is better then most I have used.. It's a larger then normal diamond so you can rake easily with it but still manipulate back pins like you would with a hook.. I tried to make it as universal as I could so I could just carry that, along with a multitools flathead screwdriver for a tension wrench..
But as far as the law cares even if I ditched the pick (which I would hands down) they could still charge me with possession of burglary tools (or B&E) with only something like a multitool.. Even a butter knife that you could carry as a shove knife could get you charged with it..

Also I would recommend if you use picks ever or carry them, carry the pick laws with you.. granted at least the laws of IL. are written so grey that you can almost always be charged, even if your just randomly stopped and searched on a traffic stop.. And someone mentioned something about getting a locksmithing license so you could legally carry picks while partaking in UE, that wouldn't apply because you would be trespassing no matter what making it null and void.. I can get a carry permit for a gun (not really in IL. but in theory), but if I break into someones house and rob them it's still armed robbery with a firearm..

This is true, getting the locksmith permit only come in use where possessing lockpicks is illegal.

I always keep a hook and a tension wrench in my wallet in case i have forget my keys in my car or at home, but thats only because i am allowed to have them where i live. Also they become a rather heavy burden if you ever scout an area (or trespass in an active one) so i always have to remember to leave them in the car
