| | What do YOU need?? < on 4/7/2009 8:11 PM >
| | | So, I'm an industrial design major, meaning I come up with ideas for new items and products as well as re-designing old ones. With my interest in UEing I figure I can put my talents to good use inventing things that will be useful to the hobby. I already have some ideas for items that will make climbing up walls and using ropes easier, but I want as much feedback and ideas as I can find, so... What equipment, if any, do you find useful when exploring? What problems do you run into, either with your gear or just in general? Do you have any ideas for helpful stuff that you wish you could implement? What are some typical obstacles you have to deal with? What kinds of things do you consider dangerous? Is there anything you wish you had but doesn't exist? It can be something ridiculous, that's okay.

| | | Ok. Here is an idea for you.
I want something like this, but much smaller; hand held, load bearing, no wider than two carabiners stacked next to each other. I want it to be able to close by squeezing the hand; and open by relaxing the hand. Purpose: to be used to climb fences quickly and more securely. Method: Insert claw between chainlink; squeeze to close and lock securely. Pull yourself up. Repeat. Ideally one would used two of these; one in each hand.

Something like a balloon that you could send up with a camera on it, to see what's over walls, over hills, in the forest, down sideroads. The idea being it would save you time. I know that there's a model plane with a camera that you can steer using an LCD screen displaying a map. The prototype is $10,000 though. Oh... and you'd get the balloon back lest your camera go up into the sky.

| | | I've always wanted a durable, lightweight, collapsible "Urban Duckblind." Are you familiar with the Metal Gear games? Think Snake's cardboard box. http://www.youtube...atch?v=RBJ9R0TU8-s I'm talking about a small package that unfolds quickly into something that looks totally ordinary, like a wooden crate, or a chunk of ventilation duct or something, that you could climb inside of and no one walking past would be the wiser. It could be made of some sort of printed fabric stretched over a flexible wire frame. Like this: http://www.youtube...atch?v=fuolnTBJyZ8 but at the end, it looks like a filing cabinet. And I'm hiding in it.

*is confuzzled* But... I am a rookie asking a question... or is that just a random warning? Anyway, thanks to everyone who has replied so far. You guys are being really helpful. Keep 'em coming! VicariousVadder, I've already got a couple ideas of how to implement your suggestion, I'll post some of the designs after I sketch them out. I have to do more research for the rest... Invisibility cloak would be hard to pull off, what about something wearable that obscured your person-like profile? Camo for the city? And some sort of hidey shelter... all good stuff.

I don't think that was meant for you How about a more flexible way of hanging bags off things? If I want to suspend my backpack from a drain stepiron, I use a novelty giant carabiner, as regular sized hooks and such are far too small to go around the metal bar. Perhaps something with a strap that hooked back around itself could work?

I think you have already come up with a great design. Market it before someone beats you to it. Get the patent going. http://www.uspto.gov/

Too late, he's precluded a patent by disclosing the details publicly! I hear the sound of potential millions gurgling down the drain...

| | | Voila, I MAY be a millionaire soon...I found the address for the The Commissioner of Patents at The Canadian Intellectual Property Office and am drafting up an abstract and some more sketches tonight! RETARDEDLY in Canadian fashion it requires that it be mailed in traditionally...So I'm seriously gonna try and wrap this up haha I wonder if this is how most inventions are made?? Just randomly... When I'm a millionaire I'm bringing my private helicopter to the next Toronto meet and I will fly to, and also rappel everyone into the next location...but not after everyone gets all the best gear from MEC

| | | improved tripods, grappling hooks, head lamps and flashlights are always welcome. Im getting my degree in Industrial Design too....where do you go to school? and unfortunately the process of getting a patent in Canada is a long and expensive one....it'll cost you $8-10,000+ and take up to 2 yrs depending on the complexity of your design and the resources your patent lawyer is willing to devote...and the worst thing is that its entirely up to the patent holder to enforce their rights...and that requires deep, deep pockets. its almost more of a symbolic protection for all but the largest corporations. Most people simply cannot afford to protect their intillectual property, even if they have a patent to "protect them". Unless theres a serious potential for long-term revenue from your idea, a lot of times its more practical / economical to simply forgo the patent process, as the chinese will steal your shit anyways. sorry for the rant...we've been meeting with patent lawyers for the past few weeks in my professional practices class lol [last edit 4/9/2009 3:41 AM by terapr0 - edited 1 times]

If not that, I'll throw a vote in for the instant beer machine... would save me enough money to hire an industrial engineer to custom build me a batman belt.
