| | | Here is what my trunk looks like. I got it all packed and ready for my spring break exploration tour. Everything together could run you a lot of money, but you'd be impressed the things you can find at Flea markets, Used stores, your parents garage, friends garage (all with their permission of course). I keep my trunk like this in case i ever run into anything good. There's a pic of me a buddy took in full gear. I do carry a BB pistol, one time i got attacked by a killer raccoon-possum hybrid thing. funny now but i got 5 stitches (no joke)

| | | HaHaHa, yes. It is hard to walk around the street, or drive my car in this. The pads are strictly underground work. Everything else is covered up with a hoodie.

| | | No contest...Cobra, for sure........I'll AGREE, it is a bit much. But i think its a psychological thing. I feel well-protected, which means i explore further, longer, and some places i normally would not go in just some jeans and a shirt. lol, surely someone has to appreciate that? Sticking to the thread, its all very cheap equipment, and it works well, physically and mentally (ha!)

I wonder if that mask P-100 rated?
Anyways, as far as costs are concerned, you don't REALLY need anything to explore but a $20 flashlight and some decent footwear. The biggest expense I find is camera equipment; I've spent around $500 myself, and have nowhere near what I want. [last edit 3/25/2009 5:03 AM by programmer437 - edited 1 times]

How close can you go?
| | Re: Cost of UE Equipment? <Reply # 30 on 3/25/2009 9:29 AM >
| | | I don't think I have ever bought anything UE specific. The clothes I wear while exploring are more or less what I use or used every day before "retiring" them for UE. Other equipment, such as cameras and flashlights or car and bicycle, have other uses as well. Of course there's fuel and food, but I don't think they count.

| | | I dont think ive ever bought anything specifically for using while "exploring"... I have always owned a camera or two, I have a headlamp for climbing and backpacking... and Im not really interested in the whole urban decay thing so a mask is pretty un-needed... my waders I have owned for a long time because I fly fish... I guess occasionally Ill buy a coke after I get out of a drain? The whole gear-head mentality (as typified by the ninja looking guy a couple of posts up) baffles me.

| | | Things bought soley for UE: 20$ for a 4d maglight. Yeah, the light isn't the brightest, but that's not what you choose a 4d around for, is it. 40$ for a tripod - essentially, it makes night shots possible. $20 telescoping hook-pole-thing $5 worth of Sal-Val butterknives Things bought with UE in mind: $200 DSLR (Rebel 300) Things bought that ended up used in UE: $200? climbing gear $10 leather gloves $40 boots $20 lock picks $20 cargo pants (5.11's, with kneepad slots + extra pockets + butt strap) $30 camo clothing $30 respirator $20 knife
Really, between other hobbies (climbing, airsoft, locks) and urbex I have a lot of crossover. My advice would be to get a flashlight and a knife (you always need a knife) and start exploring, picking up other gear as you develop a need for it. | | | Personally, I think maglights are the best for exploring. They are waterproof, nearly indestructible, and have a spare bulb in the battery cap, not to mention they are very, very bright. I have yet to own, or see a flashlight that compares to a maglight. The are so popular, simply because they...just...work. They also double as weapons if you accidentally find yourself walking up on a hobo's pitch, or dealing with similar situations. If you really wanted to, you could even convert them to LED with a simple conversion kit. They are sold at Target for about $19.

| | | A good Respirator is very important, make sure to get one that has a hepa filter on it. Or don't even bother. Paper masks only work for dust, anything that could hurt kill or infect you is small enough to slip threw most normal masks. SO GO GET A NICE MASK.
