| | | What are the 2 way radio's for? If you and your partner split up and go different ways? Respirators where can you find these and how long do they last if you say spend 3 hours in an asbestos building? Any other Ideas like a first aid kit needed? Water?

So far there's been no need for the radios but they would have been handy while exploring a large abandoned mine and seperate buildings during two past trips. As for respirators you could go with Home Hardware for your basic filter or an industrial supply store. First aid kit and water are what I would term 'common sense' items.

No worries! Just letting you know using the "Search" feature and just an item, such as, respirator, should yield some result.

| | | Rope- $20: Handy for those "You didn't close that door did you?" moments when you are 3+ stories up. Maglight- $20: Nuf' said. Assorted backup flashlights- $0-$30. Water- you should know how much it costs and what to use it for. Don't ever go without it. Food- whatever. Tripod- $20 used. Get what suits your needs. Bandaids- free, from the last time you visited your mom's house for little cuts & scrapes. Gauze- for when you or your friends really jack themselves up. Gloves- $20: mechanix wear. Good for handling the nastier things in abandonments. Backpack- $18-$50: The school bag is for easier explorations. Its cheap and fits everything you can imagine. The camelback if for when I go mountain biking, and for the more strenuous forays. The internal bladder is handy for the hotter days. Not pictured- 8. mp Canon Powershot S5 ($499), your choice of knife, respirator, old clothes and sturdy shoes.

| | | | Re: Cost of UE Equipment? <Reply # 12 on 3/24/2009 1:30 AM >
| | | Don't go out and start buying a bunch of stuff. Buy one thing: a flashlight. If you have your eyes on a specific place where you need a respirator, then get that. If you have your eyes on a drain, then get waders. Beyond those three things, just get what you need as you need it. Water proof hiking boots are really nice to have. As is a really nice camera (you could easily spend a few thousand dollars on that if you are serious about photography), an expensive flashlight, a helmet and/or headlamp, multitool, rope, harnesses, other climbing equipment, police scanners, 2-way radios, a camel back, night vision goggles, colored lights, a hand-held GPS, an oxygen meter, a grappling hook, a manhole popper, and, of course a Leer Jet are all nice to have. But don't get them until you need them. The only essential equipment is a flashlight and, for certain locations, a respirator.

Or, people can keep letting you know what they spent on their gear. Either way, it's cool. Edit : I shut-up now :X [last edit 3/24/2009 1:33 AM by Opheliaism - edited 1 times]

Wal-Mart, Lowes and Home Depot all sell a wide variety of maglights and other flashlights. I'm not at all a fan of maglights though. In fact, I hate them. They suck for exploring. Get something much cheaper and batter. Physically small flashlights that you can easily conceal in your pocket are best. Definitely go LED, not incandescent. There are tons of other threads on here about flashlights though. Use search. And don't get a maglight.

| | | I'm doing photography so it was a bit more expensive if you include a good camera body, a sturdy tripod and lenses, but the camera gear being falcultative, I just had to buy a good led headlamp and a p-100 respirator. I got both for less than 90$ (cnd) There is a lot of hype about grappling hook, tabi boots and ninja suit but I'm not really into that stuff...
