So I managed to secure for myself an Epson Stylus Photo 2400 printer (it's fantastic, thanks), and now I'm a bit shaky on the output thing.

To wit: colour on glossy or matte?

personally i prefer my photos on matte paper. i don't like the extra shininess of the gloss paper.

High resolution color laser is good for matte work. Not cheapo Samsungs or Minoltas for $500. 600 dpi doesn't cut it with opaque and non blend-able inks.

I have the Tektronix Phaser 740P for matte finish and a dye sub for pro-look stuff. You can pick up an old Kodak 8110 for about $300 now, though the paper's really pricey. I have a Shinko M8 and a Citizen CW01 both that I quite like, and you can get the Kodak labeled derivative of the Shinko M4 (Kodak 6800/6850) for about $500 used, as they are reaching end of life in commercial installations such as drug stores.

Sadly, the inkjet actually is more expensive if you are doing more than a few photos than buying and running a dye sublimation unit.

go with a satin finish, it's a nice in-between. You'll get better contrast and crispier image than matte paper wich absorb usually too much the ink (spreading it..), and you won't get the annoying light reflections caused by a glossy paper.

Semi-gloss looks good on some photos. I hate high-gloss though.

In other words, what are the images and where do you want the ink to settle? Does paper texture matter to you? A lot of printing companies will sell sample packs so that you can do smaller test prints.

Well...I'm playing around with the printer (it's excellent, thanks) and various papers. I've printed on both gloss and matte, and each result is excellent. In fact, a side by side comparison of a print shop and the printer are indistinguishable.

The gloss produces nice results, but seem a bit bright. The matte work well for HDR shots, as they seem to flatten the image a bit.

Overall, I'd likely print on gloss for B/W work, and matte for colour work. Or it would depend on the shot and my expectations.

And in the end, it's a matter of preference. Thanks to all for their input.

Perhaps the quality of papers or just the general aesthetic has shifted but prior to the 90's you rarely saw gallery or museum prints that were not on glossy paper. Glossy tends to enhance detail and matte can flatten it out, because of the way their surfaces absorb/reflect light - at least that was the old school rule of thumb. Personally, I find it hard to imagine using anything but glossy unless I am trying to get a certain effect, for example, toners, such as sepia, traditionally are much more effective with matte paper.

I might be picking up one of these soon...

Epson Pro 7800

I have only made prints from one using the Premium Lustre (matte surface) and canvas... but im sure their glossy papers are pretty nice as well

7800 is a nice printer, I have a 9600 myself. You just have to print constantly though, they don't like to sit, heads have a tendency to clog easily and the profiles need to be updated. Don't use any factory rips, it'll just be a pain in the arse.

yeah.... only ink cartridges I know that you gotta shake like a Polaroid picture before you put them in. I guess something in them settles if you dont use it for a while.
