Check the new formula:

(Threads created + # of posts) / (# of pics + # of locations visited) = X

If X < between 0 and 5...You need to get off your computer and EXPLORE SOMETHING

Wow... Tough Crowd.

Just like Lucifer, I am a "newb" here on this site.

In fairness to both sides, the young man (though filled with the bravado of youth) is just trying to fulfill his "passion" for UE.

I respect that, even though he may come off as a little too "aggressive" for most of you more seasoned veterans. All he is really trying to do is satisfy the innate curiosity we all seem to possess when it comes to exploring abandoned places.

As long as he is respectful and non-destructive, what's the problem?

Your right I'm sorry to insinuate that actually exploring something and researching the history of said something might provide a richer experience of Urban Exploration. Talking about it is just fine.

Just get out there dude, ya don't need the database...It's a convenience. Call me a jerk but you will get 10x the positive results if you put the groundwork in and post a location. I have full confidence that it will be met with roaring internet-forum applause! NOBODY will bug on how simple the location is!

*chants* WE WANT PICS! WE WANT HISTORY!

(Forgive my continued bluntness...It's just how I am...I just want ya to enjoy exploring!!!)

Of Course, I agree 100% about "research" and "finding your own way".

But persons who are new to this need encouragement, not admonishment, IMO.

I'll admit even though I can't stand house and barn posts I still appreciate it when someone takes the time to go look for something. Who cares if everyone has been to Lister? Go see it once for yourself. Taking pictures and just doing a short write up goes much further to win the trust of people who don't know you. It just shows genuine interest.

I remember your first posts because you did that, I'm sure others do too.

See I hear what you guys are saying about going out and doing it.

But going out and doing it costs me $10 an hour.

My first time out I was thrown over a 12 foot plywood fence and climbed up two stories on a dangling wire with no shoes to enter the theater from the roof. I ran all over that roof for a way in but I could not get in without tools. I didn't even have shoes or a light but I was willing to get in and climb down the scaffolding a virgin explorer in the dark. Well my luck the door didn't open but that could not stop me. I could not get in the middle for the locked iron doors and secured windows taunted my every attempt. There I saw a pile of bricks blocking a window covered only by a rotten board. Inside I discovered a workshop that had long been used by a hobo who collected records and even had a living room set up down there.
I found myself a glove down there. I always bring it with me exploring now.

I didn't get further than that room but thats only because of a major structural collapse that I climbed up into. It felt like a building had fallen down around me.

Getting out of there Tamara pointed the way to the Lister, I wanted to do it since I moved here but never had the guts to go solo. Resolved in Tamara's confidence I pushed back the fencing for her to get through onto a nearby ladder, I then jumped over off a garbage bin. We made our way into the Lister and took so many pictures in there. We had fun posing and trying not to laugh at each other. I found a check stub book in the trash from the 80s and we got creeped out by a noise that turned out to be a drop of water. I was holding that maglite ready to beat some coon face.

Tamara informed me "Careful we've run into raccoons up here in the past" So I'm looking down at my feet at the metal bars all over "Tamara I'm surrounded by steel pipes, and I've got your flashlight, I'd like to see that happen"

Then after a glimpse of the city from the rooftops we went back down to take a few more photos and slipped out the front door.

That all cost me $40.
I'm a single parent of two youngins so when I get out there I like to know where I am going, and have a back up site or two incase we can't get in. It also has to be a good night for my sitter and for any of my friends so I can go with someone.

Now that I finally have my own camera all I need is to figure out where I want to go and who will come with me.

I actually took my fancy little camera out and posted shots on here and you know, you guys never respond when someone actually does post pictures. But when I lack photos I get reamed on. Thanks!

That's a common experience - even the best photographers often see their threads slip down the list, devoid of comments. All it takes is someone else to post something particularly novel at the same time, and your stuff sinks without a trace. Best not to take it personally.

taking the pics and posting them was great..now we can see a bit of what your up to....but from the sceptics point of view, and really, that's what your facing here, is all those photos could have been taken standing outside the building...and they are all close up so actually you could have just been in the parking lot of any building.

from a helpful point of view, taking at least one wide angle shot so we see what were looking at, then a couple of interiors ( and this can be done without advertising the address if that's your concern ) would be a step in the right direction, and then we can see some exploring taking place.

unfortunately your facing tough critics here, everyone is happy to help and encourage but they want to see the effort first - and honestly thats pictorial evidence and not written.

having seen thousands of locations and photos you have some work to do to win people over

I think people who are new to this need to step away from the keyboard and realise they don't need a forum support structure to enable their participation in 'urban exploration'. Nobody needs the uedb, nobody needs a handout and nobody needs to know about the incremental advantage (!) the right backpack/flashlight/camera/shoes/nutsack is going to give them.

Plenty of people got by just fine doing this before the mass popularization, or even creation, of the internet. The 10 year-olds in my neighbourhood somehow managed explore without Access All Areas, guidance, a shopping list of epic locations or even a forum (though I suspect some of those 10 year-olds are members here).

I don't understand why people find this all so difficult, just go out and do.

Wow... Tough Crowd.

It can be. Particularly (and amusingly) when new members come in all full of bravado and talk, going on about how they're gonna kick ass and take names, break everyone's limitations, then produce a few average photos of average locations. Explore however you want but come in talking a big game then throw down this? lol.

So far the results aren't living up to the hype.

Yeah see I was talking to Tamara last night and she called me a noob. I could not believe it!

I JUST moved to Hamilton with kids, ALONE. I don't even have any friends here and I'm the only one watching my kids 24/7 I've managed to find all of six really good sites on my own here and we're talking within a 2 minute walk from my house *giggle* because I'm scared to go any further on my own.

The reason I love being called a noob is because I JUST signed up for the website. And I never cared to take pictures before because honestly I've been doing this for my own enjoyment.

Back home where I come from I could put at least 40 sites in the DB and I might just do so this summer because I could bulk the Ontario section in size almost overnight.

I have better shots than the ones I posted. I showed you I was there, why I found it beautiful and thats good enough. Want to know more? If you're in my are we'll go in person.
Cool?

LoL

And you asked for pictures, you got them.

Your enthusiasm is excellent, and finding 6 sites on your own is great. Whether or not anyone has been there already is completely irrelevant.

There are 1459 locations in the Ontario section of the DB, so you know.

Why get in?

Posted by Lucifer
because I like challenge.

Ok, go fer it. I'll tell ya that the internet is damn hard to impress though. I think maybe 3 to 10 people on the whole site care about my explores and pictures, but that's not why I do it - and if my photo threads sink to the bottom without ever a peep, it won't hurt my feelings. Why don't I care? I could try to claim cred like "Oh, I'm 'the' leading drainer in NC, check out my hot virgin drains!" But I don't have time or sick drains to back that claim. (Strikethru so you guys know I don't really think that shit)

So I try to post good stuff when I get a chance, don't care much how many replies or pageviews I get, try to give advice to noobs on drains an photography when I know, and then close the browser and go on with my life. If someone cares a lot about what I said or showed, awesome. I like talking about explores and photography if someone's willing to put up with me. But I explore for the exploration, and document the drains to have bait to get people I know to go in with me. So Lucifer, fuck the internet, right? Just like away from the keyboard you'll only get a large positive reaction for amazing stuff. I vaguely look forward to more stories of tranny Spiderman adventures, but only if you include shiny pictures to keep my attention focused. Give Tamara a vidcam next time, lol

Thanks guys the internet fucked me back.

I wrote a whole nostalgic thing whatever I don't care anymore...

I just want to say that I don't expect fame. But when someone asks me to post pics they damn well better say thank you because I've been doing this out of my own enjoyment without a camera for years and I went and spent money on one this month.

It surprises me that people still treat me like a noob, even admins on this site have only been on this site 6 years. I know they've been exploring longer than 6 years but no one called them noobs when they got on here. I'm new to the community. Adapted to the lifestyle but always have more to learn. Thank you to those of you from this board who have helped me, it has made significant progress in me toward returning to the rooftops and tunnels of my inner nature.

I believe that is because the site didn't exist before that.
Besides, there's only one admin (Avatar-X). Lots of moderators, though, who have varying lengths of UER membership.

I'm new to the community.

So... you're a noob and you're surprised that people treat you like a noob? While you might not enjoy having to "prove yourself", that's the way it goes.

I really wouldn't hold your breath for a thank you. Just a hunch.

No one forced you to spend money on a camera. You chose to.
