Blown out sky repairs.

I was going through a memory card for a camera I no longer own, and came across these two photos. I really liked the detail the camera had managed to pic up, but the sky was completely blown out. So I tried to past in some sky's I shot specifically for this purpose, and need your opinion on the results.

good work!

number 2 is more realistic.

for #1, i think it would look better if you did a little burning on the chimney to darken it up a bit.

edit: also remove that dark line across the top of #1, just clone it out.

what steps did you take to bring in the blue sky?

the second attempt is much more natural...the first one has the look of it being tacked on.

Thank you. That dark line was a powerline for the house in front of it. And I'll try your advise on burning the chimney. Why they used such a pale brick I fail to fathom.

what steps did you take to bring in the blue sky?

First: let me tell you right now that I have Photoshop Elements 5, so the technique that I used might be different in Full Photoshop. What I did was I first took the photo of sky that I wanted to use and opened that in the full edit screen. I hit Ctrl+A to select the entire photo. Next I opened the house picture and clicked the magic wand, setting the tolerance for a medium amount of around 10-15. I selected the blown out sky, then went back with the selection brush to subtract any parts of the house that had been selected with the sky. I had to work a lot with the chimney because of it's coloration, so I basicaly had to paint it out of the selection...not easy with my touchpad.

The next part I can't remember correctly, as I'm not used to doing so much work for a picture. But I BELIEVE that after I cleaned the selection to include only the sky, I clicked Edit, then Paste into Selection. If not, I may have made a blank layer and pasted the substitute sky onto that. I'm sorry but I can't remember for sure what I did, though the first options sounds more correct to me. I used this proceedure for both photo's.

I've tried about 8 different substitute skies, but nothing quite seemed to fit. Is it that its too blue for the tonal range of the rest of the photo?

Looks good! I agree, the second looks more natural; the first just looks somewhat "off".

I think I know why the first pic looks off: it's because there are no shadows. With a sky that bright, you'd expect to see some shadows SOMEWHERE on the picture, but there are none. It's less obvious with the second one because of the way the sky pales towards the left. Makes it more agreeable to the mind.

I think it worked in #2...for whatever reason it looks too fake in #1, maybe if you had used just a blue sky with no clouds?

The sky was overcast at the time of the pictures. I think I'm gonna try some cloudy skies and see if that makes a difference.

Okay, here are the new ones.

It is the fine detail of the tree branches that's fucking you up in #1

Felon has the right idea...once again #2 takes it, but that's just b/c of the tree in #1...
