These are good HDRs in that it's not oversaturated suckage (which is nice to not see!) I know my own reflex is to get cartoonish ones. But...there doesn't seem to be much benefit to the dynamic range from the +/- 2 exposure.

I think that the particular light conditions here require a higher range to 'get past' the streetlights, so that the building is brighter. These are really well-composed, and I like how the shrubbery turned out!

Nicksan and Desmet:

Is it b/c #1 is too overdone and "cartoony"?

While #2 looks more realistic?

i like the second better, just a little to much on the first one. They could both use straightening though.

I'm with you guys.

#1 is overdone but #2 uses the HDR technique well.

I don't think one is overdone in a big way. It seems a bit soft though. If you use photoshop hdr ps can benefit from some smart sharpening up to +200. Depends on the pic.

Try this one and see if you like it

- shoot 5 or 7 genuine frames, 1 stop apart
- tonemap in photomatix and use the most conservative settings

Most important is to keep the light smoothing in the middle or more to the right.

- Save in a format you like

- open in photoshop and adjust it as a regular photo.
- as a last step adjust contrast/sharpening

I, personally, like them both.

I attempted an HDR photo once, and (maybe I became over zealous) I decided to use 7 photos, 1 exposed normally, three under, and three over, at small intervals.
But something strange happened, the photo would get brighter then suddenly drop down darker again. The aperture was still the same, the shutter speed was incrementing properly, and the ISO hadn't changed, however some how the image would suddenly jump down/up a peg as far a brightness was concerned... Could it have been the auto white balance that I left on?
