| | | NOLA Levi Slaughter Asphalt Co. (The Dog House) < on 3/6/2009 4:43 AM >
| | | This is a smaller building we came across one day while riding bikes in the lower 9th. We'll sometimes go into some of the gutted houses just to have a look around and to see whatever's been left behind (kind of depressing really) but this one was particulary disturbing... There was nothing really noteworthy on the first floor so we just headed straight to the second. After only a few seconds a friend calls me over to her side of the house saying something about the skeleton of an animal. It was pretty big and I don't really know the area (like what kind of wild animals might be aloof) so we figured it was some sort of coyote or fox. Then we saw the collar. A thick dog collar about two inches wide connected to a huge chain. We assumed that it must have been someones pet that they had tied up and weren't able to get to it during the flood so it ultimately starved/drowned. As I started to move on I spotted another chain and collar a few feet away. Sure enough another skeleton. In the end we wound up finding a total of five collars and five dog skeletons all chained up inside the building. My question to you guys is what you think was going on here. Keep in mind that these huge chains were wrapped around the studs in the framework of the building. I came to the realization that unless someone was punching holes through their drywall, the dogs had to have been put there AFTER the flood and AFTER the house had been gutted. Did some one just leave their pitbulls there to die? Were they protecting something? Forgotten? Let me know what you think, this ones not sitting easy with me so any ideas would be appreciated.

| | | Man! That's a sucky way for dogs to die.
I'm a blatant waste of time and resources. |

| | | Thugs, gang bangers, etc. People who look at animals as property and not living beings. You either stumbled into an old meth lab or a dog fighting ring. It's sickening.

| | | Could be just about anything. I don't know if there are enough clues there to ever figure it out with any certainty.

| | | Yeah the whole thing was extremely unsettling and like you said Raticus, I'll probably never know what really happened there. Anyways I just wanted to see what everyone elses take was. But I'm curious, anyone else ever come across anything strange like this while out exploring? Or is there a thread maybe that talks about abnormal finds?

| | | If they were protecting equipment then odds would be that they would be cared for - or if barred from return the equipment would be there too. I would say with that many dogs then it was a dog fighting setup perhaps. Someone who could examine the bones might be able to tell more (marks from fighting etc)..sad.

| | | No matter what the dogs were there for originally I doubt it was anything good if they were left there to die that way. I find it so disheartening that people can even allow this to happen. I feel bad if I leave my dogs alone all day and they get to stay in the house.

| | | They weren't pets. They were either fighting dogs or most likely "bait" dogs used to train fighting dogs. These dogs have little value to the thugs who stage dog-fights. They use more timid dogs to train their "moneymakers" to kill. It's such a pathetic life. They probably go busted and didn't return to get the dogs because they weren't worthy.
