| | Weird drain thing in the middle of a lake < on 3/5/2009 7:57 PM >
| | | So I've lived in this neighborhood for a while now, and I've always wondered about this damn thing. It's really ugly, and it just sits in the middle of the lake with a constant water rushing noise coming from it.
Is this possibly indicative of some sort of big, (ie explorable) drain system? I was looking at some GIS maps last night and although it was hard to understand, what I did get from it was that there is some sort of rather large watershed basin IN my neighborhood. Is this what it was referring to? Since there are literally no abandonments in this part of town, I would be very happy to find some cool drains...

| | | there is one of these near here..has a constant sound of running water...it lets water flow from a small lake into a creek about 100 yard away...dont know if its the same but it looks the same

| | | We have some of these in our local reservoir, the ones we have are overflows. If it rains too much or something then the water level rises enough to enter the pipe and it flows out to the river... If its always got a running water sound I'd be careful, especially if its loud. But I tend to wear a tinfoil hat, so I get weary of any water in drain deeper than 6in, especially if it's moving. Use your discretion and common sense, but it may be worth a look-see if nothing else.

| | | it's either the main outlet of the lake, or a secondary overflow. The shaft goes straight down to the bottom of the lake, and then makes a 90 degree turn under the dam. The outfall should be pretty easy to spot. It's unlikely to connect to anything big, but if the outfall is nowhere nearby, I suppose it's possible. Note: if you're in a drain system that's directly connected to a lake, it might be a good idea to have a lookout or something, because they can open those gates and flood everything downstream, even if it's a sunny day.

| | | These types of drainage-control lakes are being installed more and more often... they retain the drainage water from a neighborhood or shopping center during a storm, and when the water level goes over a certain level it pours into the concrete thing you see in the picture. They retain water and thus reduce the need to build big, expensive, flood capable drains by essentially "decentralizing" drainage flow... so the more of these you see in an area, the less real drains you will find. There should be a tunnel inside of the concrete box, but it probably outfalls nearby. [last edit 3/6/2009 5:20 AM by Louie - edited 1 times]

| | | Yep, just found the outfall earlier. It's right across the street. Duh. The pipes are pretty small and have enough water in them that I wouldn't want to enter without waders, which I don't have. And I'm sure it just goes right under the street and hooks up to the drain... Dunno if it's really worth it.

| | | Not all mid-lake towers are equal. Rushing water sounds certainly indicate that it's a spillway, but a local one here truly seems to do nothing but hold up a wheelhouse for the actual spillway pipes about 50 yards away. The tower and tunnel leading to it have a constant, very slow flow of water that leaks into the structure about 30 feet above its base.
Steel trusses don't usually go in water flow. At the top is the base of that wheelhouse, grate facing the sky.
The ladder is tied in place, which casts some doubt on my idea...
There's a huge iron door, although nothing on the wall behind it.
This flowstone sticks a foot into a 4x4 tunnel, so there hasn't been high flow here in quite a while. Also the huge amount of timber on the tunnel floor was washed in from the bottom, not from the top. You can usually stalk these things to their outfall, although it's often an overgrown 4' or less concrete tunnel. Beware of spiders ;)
