Disclaimer: Chose not to take pictures this time around, sorry folks. Next time we should get some pictures.

Preface: I've done exploring before, but always in places way out in the country, where the only things I gotta worry about are rabid dogs and rednecks with shotguns driving up on me. Never had to worry about vagrants, gangs, or the police, so this was a totally new exploration high for me.

Met up with Shutchatrap for some exploration last night around 10 PM. Our plans were to hit up the "newbie" spot in town (abandoned buildings on the grounds of an active plant), a boarded up hotel, and 2 drains.

Things start off rather well. Grab a quick bite to eat then off we go! Quick drive-by recon of our first target, the plant, just to make sure cops aren't staked out there or it isn't on fire or anything. Didn't really feel like walking several blocks in sub-freezing temperatures just to find out the po-po are sitting nearby drinking coffee looking for speeders. Recon goes well, don't even see one vehicle drive by. We park a couple of blocks away, put on our gear, and start walking. Lo and behold, when we are within 50 yards of our entry point, a car drives by. And wouldn't you know, its a cop car? I stall, pretending to tie my shoe while he drives off. Soon as he is out of site, we make our entry.

This plant has several abandoned buildings all neatly clustered together, couple of smaller ones and a larger warehouse type building. We choose the closest one to enter first, a small one which looks sorta like a house. Once we enter, the first things we notice is that its dark as hell in there. There's shit everywhere, the upper floor is caving in (and later we discover, the roof), and the floor has a nice hole in it right near the door. Since this building is so close to the road, using flashlights in this area without high risk of detection is impossible. We make the decision to return during the day time, and make an exit. We head toward the larger warehouse type building, but are stopped short of our destination. Yet another car drives by quite slowly, so we hit the dirt. It appeared to be yet another cop, so we deceide to abort this section of the mission and come back another time. After this car drives off, we make our way out of the complex and back to my car. Along the way, we pass by another abandoned building of some sort. A super quick check of the doors and windows reveal intact glass and welded or locked doors. Yet another place to try again another time...

Fast forward a bit... we arrive at the boarded up hotel and start our drive-by recon, again checking for cops which discussing possible entry routes. This time, an unmarked white Crown Vic is parked in the parking lot. Odd. We drive by slowly, and someone in a dark uniform steps out. Shit... cops... again! Or a security guard, not sure. Driving back by, the cop is walking around the building, doing some sort of security check. Doh. Yet another place to try again some other time...

So, on to the drains. Outside, it is around 15F, so we are bundled up nice and tight. By the time we get to the 2nd junction room, the temperature has risen signifigantly enough to induce sweating. We continue deeper and deeper into the bowels of the city, until we reach the infall, though the water is too deep to transverse this section of pipe without waders or at least rubber boots (which neither one of us had, heh). So, we turn around.

Now, I had been warned about drain slime. That nasty film which covers the bottom of pipes, usually at water level. I had heard it was slicker than ice. Halfway back to the entrance, I must've forgotten this tidbit of information (hehe). Step, swish, boom, down my fat ass goes. Managed to keep most of my body out of the frigid water, didn't seem to get too wet at all. I've got some knee problems, so this spill agrivated those problems ten-fold. The rest of the walk out is quite painful. Being stooped over walking like an ogre while navigating around drain sludge and icy junction rooms doesn't help things. Once at the car, I discover my legs are soaked, my headlamp bag is missing, and my knuckle is bleeding (hmm...oops).

By now, my knee is throbbing in rythim with my heart, so I deceide I've had enough for one evening. Or rather, my body deceided this for me. I wanted to do more, but just don't think the leg would've held up. I drop Shutchatrap off at his home, drive to my home, change, eat some dinner, and take some medicine in hopes the throbbing will stop before my physical therapy appointment in 5 hours.

Fast forward to now... I don't know what hurts worse, my busted knee or the rest of my legs. I don't feel like our draining exploits were all that physically demanding, but my legs are telling me otherwise. I think I have a case of "drainer's thigh". My arms are really sore too...which is a huge mystery since I didn't even use them except to stabilize myself while limping out. Oh well, I'm ready for Round 2!

Conclusion: Had lots of fun, and would do it again in a heartbeat, hillarously stupid fall and all. Can't wait to do more!

That trip was a blast (not YOUR trip, THE trip, lol) A little disappointed that the factory didn't work out, but I'm excited to get back during the day sometime so we can see where we're going and take some pictures! That spill was pretty bad, and I hope your knee gets feeling better! I was a little perturbed about the security guard and what was with all the cops!?

Dude, sounds awesome. My first time wasn't that eventful. It was a basic in and out of a drain. We went as far as our senior explorer felt comfortable; of course, I still wanted to go further. Then we went to IHOP and it was amazing! Yeah, no problem with cops or anything. Had a small animal scare, but we just ran out of that tunnel and went into an adjacent one. I've only been one more time since then and I can't wait to go again. Hopefully we'll hit an abandonment this time. Either way, I need to pick up some supplies before I go on another run. One of these being a camera of some sort. I really need to get pictures.

Drainer's thigh is a bitch. Have fun walking down stairs! Good news is, keep draining and you'll end up like Chun-Li.
Cool first exploration, I wish I had some abandoned buildings around here.

Haha, "Drainer's Thigh"... Glad to know there's a name for it... >_<
Worst case in recent memory was a long trip through a drain followed the next night by dancing all night at a rave. Fun stuff... ;p

Surprised your legs still work. That would have torn my muscles apart the first few times I went draining.

Well, it wasn't my first drain, but I'm definitely no pro, either. Plus, it was a rave, so there was plenty to keep the mind off the pain, but the next day... Hoo boy. Anyway, the pain is totally worth it, and as has already been said, the more one drains, the less it hurts. ;p

You shouldn't apologize. The photos may be part of it, but by not taking photos it has forced you to put more effort into your descriptions and write a more interesting post (well I'm guessing really).

Adventure happens in drains

Cheers,

Doug
