| | | NOLA St. Charles Elementary < on 3/2/2009 7:16 AM >
| | | hey everyone. Spotted this school right off of S. Claiborne but first off let me give a little word of caution: The first floor of this school has A LOT of black mold and also this location did turn out to be an active squat. I opened the door to one room on the second floor and stumbled upon some backpacks and sleeping bags, so keep that in mind. Other than that, this location was pretty interesting. There is a pretty large auditorium, tons of cool architecture and it appears at one point there was a fire on the east side of the building. Access to the roof is possible and all 3 floors have some very interesting graffiti probably left by who ever is staying there right now. I'm curious though how often any other explorers stumble across squats or squatters. Any advise on what to do in such a situation?

| | | There are a few threads here about encountering squatters in a location. I've never been in that situation so I can't offer any advice there but thanks for the tour, looks interesting!

Infrequently, though I often squat in places myself - so don't mess with any lonely tripods, etc. you might find. If it looks active, the safe thing would be to leave immediately, but if you wanted to be "safe" you probably wouldn't be exploring in the first place. Be respectful and leave their stuff alone, and be aware that they might not take too kindly to your trespassing on their home for whatever reason. In conclusion, cigarettes are useful for bartering... for whatever. [last edit 3/2/2009 12:34 PM by Mellon_Collie - edited 2 times]

I don't smoke either, and I've never actually ran into a squatter in a building, but I've been told by more than 1 respected explorer that it's a good idea to have cigs with you.

Nah, so far, I have only passed through Louisiana ;) To be fair, I have only come across one, truly active squat. Nelson and his friends lived in the Texas and Pacific warehouse in Fort Worth and were pretty friendly. Back when he lived there, I would always call his name and ask if it was okay to come in, and he'd always says yes. I'd give him some cigarettes and maybe go drink with him on the roof and listen to his stories. Most squats however, even ones that appear active, are usually themselves abandonments within an abandonment. It's not often I carry cigarettes either, but sometimes homeless people will tell you about abandonments you didn't know about or how to get in one, or ones you didn't know about, and ones you should avoid because Joe The Stabber sleeps there.

| | | This is just a few blocks from my house. I've been trying to get my roommate to go with me, but to no avail. I've only come upon an active squat twice. The first building happened to be occupied by some people I had met before. They didn't mind my presence (probably also didn't mind my friend giving them cigarettes). In the second building, there was someone home upstairs, and my friend and I had an incredibly uneasy feeling about the place. We left immediately.

| | | I was going to recommend the cigarette thing as well. I've taken 2 packs in with me and if I do come across a squatter, they're usually asleep and I just try not to wake them. If they do wake up, I don't run or try to hide from them, because then they might feel threatened... and throw a shoe (Or rocks!) at you. Just say 'Hi... I'm just here taking pictures, if that's cool...' I know we don't need their permission, but as has already been said, this is their home, even if only temporarily. Usually they ask why and I tell them and then offer them a smoke or 5. I've even some across some that showed me around the place and showed me things I normally wouldn't have found.
This is an awesome location, btw. I love abandoned schools.

yeah there are (sadly) a ton of empty schools scattered throughout new orleans. From what I've seen so far, some haven't even been touched and probably wont be for a very long time. It's pretty amazing. I think the 9th ward alone has something like 5 schools "temporarily closed" and only 1 that's fully active.
you wonder where all the money went....

I can think of at least four here in the 8th ward that are closed, but I couldn't for the life of me tell you where an active one is. =/
