| | | | Jewish Dorm Shots, need opinions. < on 2/26/2009 8:45 PM >
| | | I'm just finished editing my set from the Historic section of Waterbury, paring it from 156 to 99. And with your opinions I might be able to pare it even further. So I need some honest opinions on these pics. Rather than spend my whole time just documenting the place, I actually set up a few shots and tried different angles for some of them. Be as blunt as you need. I'm posting them in gallery form here because photobucket is giving me trouble. They normally would have been in sets of two, but that's not possible with the gallery.

| | | That place looks like fun. Are you asking which of each set we prefer? Set 1: I like the lighting in pic A better, but the angle on pic B. I think B wins. Set 2: Definitely pic A. Set 3: Pic B shows it better. Set 4: Pic B Set 5: Pic A Set 6: Without a doubt, pic B Set 7: Pic A. Nice shots!

| | | Set A : first photo, nice shadows where the second image is too dark. Set B : no opinion, both seem to be equal Set C : second image as you can see more of the staircase winding its way up Set D : second image because of the cut-off vase in the first image Set E : first image, you don't see the entire chair which I feel takes away from what you're trying to capture Set F: second image has better lighting, the first is too dark Set G : second image as the angle seems to suit the photo better Brighter image below:

| | | Just one overall comment: It looks like all these shots are taken at standing eye level. It would be worth trying some different angles, low down, standing on something, that sort of thing, to get some different perspectives.

| | | You've got a good start here, picking out the interesting quirks that make each place unique. I'd focus more on composition. Want to take a picture of a plaque? Fine, but don't center your subject. Work it in as a compositional element. Then think lighting, focus. In other words make the best photo of that plaque you can possibly make. Sometimes shots of the mundane, every day items come out great. Most of the time no. But don't stop shooting until you've come as close as you can.

Yes, I'm trying to pare the set down further. It is now at 85, but I want to reduce it more without cutting the documentary feel of it. Set 1: I'm rather partial to a, which is two photo's combined into a wide. Set 2: I like the detail in the first one, but I hadn't realized how centered it was. I shot the second one from farther away to show that some attempt to catch the water from the leak had been attempted before the building was abandoned. Set 3: I agree. Set 4: That one was a dilemma for me, I had my back against a wall and couldn't deside what to chop, the safe or the vase. Set 5: Got it. For some reason, setting the camera higher made the second shot warmer. Set 6: I was torn in that one too. When I came to that doorway, the first thing that caught my eyes was the wooden wall paneling. The chairs were secondary to me. Set 7: You went for the straight on shot huh? Thank you for your time.

Set A: I agree. The images were taken two hours apart. Pic 2 was the second to last shot for that day, as the sun was already behind the other houses. Set B: Alright. Set C: Yeah, that does have better feel to it. The blown out window isn't as bothersome in that one. Set D: Second it is. Set E: Agreed. Also the second one has a warmer feel to it that is at odds to the way the room really was. Set F: I rather liked the first one. But you're right, the second one feels better. The first actually is really noisy, so I couldn't lighten it adequately post-shoot. I may keep that image, if only to compare it to a disgusting wall in the same room. How did I know everyone was gonna go for the chairs...*sigh* Well, chair enthusiasts should like the coming sets, there are tons of them. Set G: Thank you. I kept that one intentionally dark, to put more emphesis on the setting sun. Also I wanted to avoid blowout of the sky when I edited it later. Thank you for your time.

Aside from the safe, which was two feet high, they all WERE taken at I level. I injured my back a week ago, and it was all I could do to stand back up again after I shot that safe. Once my back heals, I'll be able to try some different viewpoints. I just hope this place stays in this condition for a while.

I have a feeling that you will like the coming sets, I shot a few books and test papers and such. There was this wierd card with a plastic bubble built into it, that was filled with some kind of great smelling herb or something. Maybe when I post the set, you can help translate?

Thank you for being so helpful and being kind with your advice. To tell you the truth, I had some serious time restraints. The sun was going down and it was going to be the last sunny day for the next week. I wanted to shoot as much of this place as I could before I had to take a week off, just incase scrappers get to the place. There is already signs of it; in the basement, pipes had been cut off the water heater, and there was wiring hanging from the ceiling. I'm worried about the fate of this place, I don't wanna go through another ACS. ((If you don't know what I'm talking about, check out a previous set of mine: "My Valentine......got raped."))
