I'm intrigued by this tower. What leads you to believe it's abandoned? My first thought was that those things were some kind of manlift, but actually I think Vadder is right.

It's a former long lines and I don't see any new cell transmitters on it (the full size from his flickr I mean) It will probably be re-used in the future but I don't see anything that looks active on it. Those transmitters have probably been dead for over a decade, or two.

I'm pretty sure Vadder is right about what those things are; I looked back at some of the pictures and noticed what looked like mounts that could have held a rod reaching from the cages to the horns.

As for why I think it is dead...all the transmitters are old and there was absolutely no noise from the building at the base (and some plants growing on its roof). You can also sort of see how bad the condition of the dishes are in this picture...notice the torn, dirty fabric.

I now understand what these where for ... a mount up close:

And no active transmitters like you can see here:

We went back at night a few weeks later:
http://www.uer.ca/...rpage=7&pp#post137

We just climbed past them really fast and yes we could feel the heat kicking off them ... we got kinda nervous about using our cameras (remembering ulive's watertower) around them so when we returned at night we didn't do any tippity top shots ... but the view was about the same 50' from the top where we took the uphigh pictures: 200' vs 250' -- still very much above the tree line / hill line.

Sigh, all my pictures are from last year, I really want to get back out climbing shit but I'm trying to save money to get my car fixed up.

Just do all your research first...radiation levels can be deadly.

yeah i need to go check out a tower near me. I think its a cell tower. Do those have a safe radiation level?

Cell's are always safe. I know some people who (honestly) just laugh and say "don't hang around in front." I tend to climb up to 10' under the transmitters though. Same view, and zero risk. They tend to be surprisingly easy. Go for it.

Don't touch them either.

I won't climb up a full size tower to "service level",where all the transmitters are at the top, though I'll climb to below the transmitters ... when you can feel the heat, that's a good indicator to stop or to move quicker past a transmitter if it's not at the top.

Long lines are more better IMO. They incorporate nifty landings and top level usually has a platform and the usual MO is you have to climb past transmitter tiers which are located about 4/5 of the way up, but they don't put many transmitters at the top level if the defunct horn repeaters are there.

But then again we've done water towers at transmitter level. Something about water towers makes radiation behave in abnormal ways.

Yes, I'm not crazy. I was standing in the middle of a 6 powerful AM towers array and I felt dizzy, nauseous and very warm inside. As soon as I moved back to my car, I was feeling much better.

I had the same thing happening to me while I was standing directly under a hi-powered FM transmitter tower. My car was turned off but I could hear the radio station through my speakers, even if nothing was powered on. The RF was inducting in my speakers ! I felt nauseous, dizzy and warm so I left and immediately felt better.

I can has headache:

Transmitters were right next to the ladder going around 50% of this water tower.
