I had decided that I wouldn't visit the place too often, rather stopping by occasionally to watch how quicky the buildings decaying progressed. This way the place wouldn't start to feel stale. Four months after my first set, I headed over to the site and was surprised to see that the loading bay roof had collapsed. We had gotten a lot of snow and ice that year, so the collapse wasn't all that unexpected. I just hadn't though it would take the brick facing with it. A local gang calling themselves the "Bud Boyz" was partying in the lot next to it. I'm lucky they didn't come over when I set up my camera. Some of the roofing still remained, but that was probably because of the section being sheltered from direct action of the weather. Then on February 14 2009, I finally returned for a proper shoot. The lot was deserted, so I headed to the left and entered the main stairs that serviced the complex. Upon entering the building I immediately noticed something wrong...this door had been locked from the inside with a huge deadbolt before. I approached the door, my blood growing as cold as the 1 inch later of ice on the floor beyond... Sure enough, someone had managed to open the secondary loading bay door...leaving a ready entrance instead of the back entrance that could only be found if you had a flashlight. I made my way across the ice, snapping a few shots...but this was the only one that I could use. My tripod didn't handle the ice well. Another Pano of shipping later... ...and I headed towards the lobby, finding the shelving in disarray and all the doors opened. When I got into the lobby, I wanted to cry. Everything was destroyed. The wood and glass cases that had housed dozens of maps, driving routes and instruction manuals were gone...replaced with infantile tagging... The secretary's room had been ransacked... and the manager's office was in disarray. One of the desks was missing, folders had gone missing from the shelves, and there was the sour smell of mildew everywhere. Even my ghost phone had been exorcized... The resource room with the was missing it's shredder and Dry Erase board, and had been thoroughly scrapped... The stock room, which had been previously locked, was broken into. The neatly stacked boxes of remotes and satellite components that I had lifted a drop ceiling tile to see, were destroyed and scattered everywhere. And the tool room, which had been a mess before, was in worse condition than ever. More to come.... Softly creeping through Empty hallways decades old, glimpsing history. I was very much a newbie back then, so my usual 'technique' was to shoot until I filled my card or my batteries died...then choose the shots that were usable. As a result, my first set is actually 5 parts...all taken on the same day...over 170 pictures were taken, but I 'trimmed' it (lol) to 81 total. I'll include the links at the bottom of this post. I collect bottles and cans for my spending money, and on ONE WEEKEND I emptied a trash can that had $14 of cans in it. Set 2 : I headed back out into the lobby to snap a few more shots of the wreckage. And now came the part I dreaded the most...checking my precious toilet dungeon. I accidentally left my water bottle on the table and it got in the shot. When I descended the ladder and shone my light around, I wanted to cry again. Everything that could be smashed had been...I set up tripod and made an exposure. (30 second at 100 ISO, light painted) Then I made a few more... The lighting system I had carefully strung up a year ago had been torn down and piled in a corner... And whoever had been scrapping down here had apparently gotten hurt; A first aid kit had been raided and a few packets of pain relievers were opened. I hope he bled like a... I decided that I'd had enough of the place, and headed back to an area that, thankfully, was still NEARLY untouched...the recessed cafeteria... I check on some additions to a table, vials of water samples taken from the Aaron Environmental labs in the basement. And checked on some more new things to arrive in the past year...more crystals growing from the tiles... Some had grown more than an inch high... They also came in a variety of shapes...Some, like the previous shot, had grown in jumbled piles...other grew straight... or in the shape of downy feathers... And this one had been shaped into a wave by air currents...straightened out, it would have been 4 inches tall. Mildly satisfied that the entire trip hadn't been a let down, I made one final shot... No, even last year it was basically just a frame, wheels, and a salvaged engine. Now even the engine is gone. But yeah, I've been trying to get these things ID'ed since I first saw them. They differ from ice flowers in the fact that all the crystals are in straight, rather than curved like the ice flowers.
