|  | | | I'm gonna go exploring for the first time tomorrow, and I was wondering what I should wear. It's gonna be around -5 to -10 tomorrow. I heard that I need to wear something that I don't care about. The problem is, the only jacket I have is a white ski jacket. What should I do? Any suggestions?

It's the difference between jeans and a thermal underneath, with a sweatshirt under your jacket, or much more than that.
My usual winter attire is: jeans, thermals, 2x long socks, boots, tshirt, thermal top, sweatshirt, army/canvas jacket, plus whatever protects from hazards.
Usual spring/fall attire: same as winter, without the thermals, extra socks, and sweatshirt.
Summer attire: whatever's comfortable and will protect me from whatever hazards at the location.
Me goin' legit would be like JarJar on speech therapy.

Not once have i been cold with that on. And i can still climb and move like i'm wearing a tank top and regular pants.

I was out last night, and cops were *EVERYWHERE* Luckily, Muttley and I stayed on the main roads in town and acted as innocent as possible. Just don't act suspicious and you'll be fine. Dressing somewhat 'professionally' and using a photoblog/school project excuse seems to work quite well.
ON TOPIC
Things to *NOT* wear:
Ski mask, pink leotard, tee shirt that says 'Screw Cops', flip flops.
Things I wear:
Jeans, long-sleeved shirt, hoodie, army coat or a new brown jacket, boots, gloves, beanie (For rural UE), ball cap (For urban UE)

Stay home. That's too damn cold for a first time out. Also if you're taking pictures you're going to need your hands free of gloves, and that could lead to making your first explore miserable. Wait till spring.

If its outside: I try to wear as many warm clothes while not looking like an arthritic Michelin man.

I went today, and my legs were a bit cold, but my hands were cold from carrying the tripod.

THat's what a backpack with strips is for my friend, If you have a good camera that you're lugging around it makes it easier to carry a Pelican or the camera bag itself. Not to mention if you're going into sandy areas it never hurts to have another layer of protection for a D70.

I once broke one of the locking clamps on my tripod on a bitter cold day; I don't know if it was brittle from the cold, but that's my suspicion. It was like -15F.
I wear Carharrt coveralls, the kind construction workers wear in the winter, and nice and faded. They don't scream "tourist!" like a North Face ski jacket does.

Yeah, I removed the tripod straps from my bag. I actually needed the tripod almost all the time, and when I didn't I just quick released it for handheld stuff.
My tripod has those screw locks instead of clamps, so I don't think it will break.
I wore 2 underarmour shirts, a sweater, and a ski jacket. It was quite nice.

Maybe in the winter. In nicer weather, I often explore in leather flip flop sandals. Hey, they're comfy! As long as fence-jumping isn't involved.
Winter? Whatever you'd normally wear. Maybe dress it up a bit. Jeans with something underneath. 2x gloves. 2x socks. Hoodie and pea coat. That's how I roll.

Ski jacket can put you out of the element really quickly. Get a Carhartt or something tough but inexpensive. They'll never do you wrong.

In pic it was -15 F and VERY windy. I was fine and dandy in this get up. Do note I am wearing 3 layers of thermals, military thermal top, thermal top normal, fleece, fleece shirt, hoodie, rain jacket/wind jacket that is AWESOME (ask anyone who has borrowed it), ski mask from dicks (keeping your face warm is VITAL), gloves, and a carnhart toboggan. 2 layers of cotton socks in boots top off my feet. Gloves are cheapo's from wal-mart.
The most important thing is LAYERS. Also, have dry socks in your bag...the suck in cold weather.
