Does anyone here know where these photos might've been taken? They're from the Life collection of photos, but I can't find any reference to them in the indexes. I'm guessing they were probably unpublished.

The only information I have:

Underground Warehouse (Biggest In U.S.)
Date taken: September 1952
Photographer: Francis Miller

The entire collection can be found here:

I recall seeing a recent show about salt (modern marvels I think, but maybe it was how do they do it on discovery/science). I think that it's an old salt mine that some company converted into a warehouse.

basically, it's a self regulating atmosphere. the ground keeps temp constant, and the salt keeps humidity constant, so it's good to store stuff. they had all sorts of things, like original movie reels, all manner of documents, artwork, etc. it was pretty cool...

It should be the place in or around Kansas City. There are numerous such sites around the country these days, but I think the KCMO site would have been one of the few in operation for storage back in the early 1950s when those cool photos were taken.

There have been occasional articles & TV stories about it over the years, but somewhere in my files I have a rather detailed US Amy Corps of Engineers historical article about it -- it was originally used as a storage depot for the US government & I think sections of it still are.

Look at that fancy thick TV aerial wire (twin lead maybe).

Either closed circuit TV, not for security probably in that common room but maybe remote speeches/classes or...

they were close enough to a city to get transmissions. No satellites in that era and TV tuners were pretty poor.

edit: they get power from the ceiling too.

The cliff and railroad with a river in the background looks familiar, like a place I passed during a road trip a few years ago. I think this is the Underground Warehouse just south of Quincy, Illinois.

I always thought these salt mines were somewhere in Utah. They were mines converted into storage because of the lack of humidity (salt after all). Other than that I can't give ya much.

One of them got blown all to hell back in the '80s too. Some kind of chemical explosion. Killed five firefighters, and probably made national news. I remember driving by there in the late '90s and they were still digging it out.

I work in the cleveland salt mine that was on modern marvels. I've only been underground for a few weeks. I'll try to take some pictures if i can, but i might lose my job. Its a pretty surreal place to work.
