return to an old friend + AN AMAZING ESCAPE (epic lulz)

anyone who knows me knows that this was MY place. years ago i used to frequent these buildings every other week, i knew every inch of it and had an obsession with the campus that nobody else in the area could quite understand. people used to wonder how i actually got photos out of it due to how sterile and empty it is (which is true) but the fact of the matter is each building on its own wasn't that special, you really had to know which buildings had what and use tunnels to find em.

about 5 years ago i had a shit experience where my car got towed WHILE i was inside one of the buildings, that sorta left a bad taste in my mouth and i didn't return for awhile (especially since the local police knew who i was due to the local paper publishing a story about me without telling me)

fast forward a few years, security was stepped up, kids were getting busted frequently, work started on campus, and the tunnels were sealed (thus making exploring here a pain, since like i said, each building on its own was pretty boring)

so this is my first return in about five years (minus a short lived trip about 2 years ago) and the buildings still had that funky graham cracker like smell that i missed so much. everything was going well until about 2 hours in i look outside and see a cop car plus two pickup trucks near my car parked outside.

my heart sinks.

upon further inspection i realize the pickup trucks are actually town utility workers and not security, but i am still faced with the problem that they are parked about 10 feet from my car and i have no idea how long they intend on working out there. 2 hours pass and they are still working. we head to another building, shoot for an hour and then are ready to leave the campus. we take one of the few open tunnels back to the building where i have a view of my car and the cop is gone, just the workers are left, ok, no big deal, they aren't going to be an issue.

so back through the tunnels once again to our exit. we run across the campus towards my car and once we turn the corner the cop is back, lights flashing, still 10 feet from my car.

son of a bitch! at this point it is goddamn 60 degrees out in february in new england and i have about 15 layers on and then it hits me...

i've always had this idea of packing a pair of running shorts in my camera bag in the worst case scenario of a situation like this, where i'd strip down to my shorts and run back to my car, because nobody would question a dude running without a shirt on in just shorts. in this case, i hadn't packed the shorts yet, but i had on these long black spandex underwear (hey, it was cold in the morning) so i stripped down to that and a t-shirt, doused myself in a bottle of water, rolled up my sleeves, left all my gear with my buddy who hid behind some bushes and ran back to my car.

i ran directly past the cop, made eye contact, acted like i was about to pass out, made it to my car, and keeled over for about 30 seconds like i just got done running a marathon, stretched for a minute, downed a bottle of water from my backseat, got in, drove off, picked up my buddy, DONE.

note to all explorers: pack shorts / spandex.

anywho, here are some photos, like i said above, these buildings are sterile / empty but i love them.

You mentioned that idea once... I wondered if you could make it work. A guy of your physique, sure. A guy my size... a little less believable!

Nice execution!

I think my favorite in the set is #8. Epic lighting. Perfect composition, imo.
Thanks for shooting and sharing man!
Stay happy, healthy and stealthy!

I wanted to add, you have the unique ability to shoot the absence of anything and somehow make THAT the subject. You utilize space and composition in concert in an awesome way to truly convey the expansive emptiness in front of your lens. I always have the most trouble with spaces that are either completely empty or madly cluttered. I just can't seem to think right or see the shots you see sometimes man. These seem to be the environments in which you shine the most. (The Hills, PB, etc.)

Nice shots! I agree, the place must be tough to shoot as it is very sterile, but you give it a nice, comfortable, intimate air. Plus, that story kicks ass! That is pure genius. "Oh, hello officer! I was running really hard there, it was good, whatchya doin here?" ... genius.

Haha - nice.
This tops my 'escape-plan' (care of Stan) which includes a tin of cat food and a can opener (cost from dollarama: $1.50) in my camera-bag, so that if busted inside a more dubious location, I can claim that I had heard cat meows days earlier, and went inside in order to help the poor darlings.

I hate when people make thread titles like this and then don't deliver.

You delivered and I thank you.

amazing photos, its shots like these that make me love exploring photos. you manage to capture a sense of nothingness and like someone else said, make that the subject. i've always felt like your shots have a meditative feeling to them, and these are no different.

bravo.
