Just an hour or two ago, I was pulled up by security while photographing the ladder guard on an expensive piece of infrastructure. I commented that I had no intention of climbing, and figured you couldn't get up there anyway, due to the ladder guard. The security guy said "oh, you'd be surprised what those little pricks can do", and proceeded to explain exactly how to circumvent the guard and climb the thing

Well, go on. How did he say you could get over.. perhaps its easier than some of my methods.

Oh, on this one, the back of the ladder was exposed, so it wasn't actually terribly difficult to work out. It wasn't what he told me that was so interesting, as the fact that he said it

Wow, I've been running into these damn things everything. They block off the steps to the ladder and there real sons of bitchs to climb over.
Im proud to say theres yet to have been a ladder guard to stop me, but damn these are MORE than an inconvience. I just finished climbing up one bigger than the one seen in the above photo to get to a roof only to find NOTHING.
Anyone els have any experiences with these little devils.

I saw my crazy tall ex-fiance jump past the ladder guard at a Steak and Shake years back to climb on the roof (it was active). I miss Steak and Shake.
Sometimes you can just have good shoes and upper body strength and get up by wedging between the guard and the building and "shimmying" up. I'm not quite that strong so that doesn't work for me. Also (half kidding) - grappling hook perhaps? ;)

We were going to try and use one of those things on one of our missions but they thing is so damn heavy/bulky. Maybe the new ones are a bit more slim-lined but mine is a tank.

I can wallrun pretty well, but yeah, noise would be a big issue. I've used it to get to ladders on the sides of big brick buildings a few times, though. Flat metal would definitely be another story..
Anyway, here we go.

I see a hex nut on the right. Got a wrench? It's only held on by that nut, unless it has hinges near the ladder too.

It's mesh, and I have an experiment I've been meaning to try.
1) Wear boots.
2) Strap a metal hook to each boot's toe that you can put all your weight on.
3) Climb with easy toe-holding power.

I use this, Telesteps. They are great and fairly light considering. I can keep them stored in my trunk and I determine if I need it when I scope out the target area I am going to explore. If I need it, I tie to my backpack. I've used it to climb up on roofs and then I pull it up behind me, collapse it and leave it until I get back to get back down. Wonderful device and I recommend it highly. I found mine in a pawn shop for $50 and it is mostly aluminum, they didn't know what they had. Anyhow, happy exploring!

I prefer http://www.rei.com/product/474106 etriers. They are cheaper (especially if you ebay them), lighter, and I can throw a pair in my bag with some rope and have them as a "just-in-case" option.

You should start learning, its really not that difficult on consumer-level locks. And by learning, I mean buy a set of picks (15$), and a lock (5$) and repin it to only two cylinders, and work your way up to 5.

I can see how these would be immensely handy to have, and definitely a cheaper option than the telesteps. But I must say, there is something about the telesteps that makes me want to own them. Retractable things are nifty.

For some locations I pair them with a retractable painters pole. 'Cause yeah, it's nifty.
